Wool blend yarns are a fantastic choice for baby blankets, offering warmth and durability. However, to ensure it's gentle on a baby's skin, choose a blend featuring a higher percentage of soft fibers like Merino wool or alpaca. These fibers are less irritating and cozier for sensitive skin. Always wash the finished blanket with a mild, baby-friendly detergent to soften it further before use.

After living in regional Australia for the past year, my family and I are off traveling again. This time, we’re come to Seville, Spain! While we’ve been to Spain before we’ve never come to this part of the country, so that’s very exciting.

One of my favorite things to do when I visit a new place is…

Going to the local yarn stores, of course!

So, I thought I’d give you a little tour…

I visited Otro Punto Merceria Creativa (which literally translates to Another Point Creative Haberdashery in English), run by the lovely Mercedes.

Most of the yarns she had in stock were from Katia, a yarn manufacturer from Barcelona, Spain, founded in 1951. Many of their yarns have materials sourced from local farmers, spinners, and dyers.

In addition to selling yarns, she offers supplies for quilting, crocheting, knitting, sewing, embroidery, cross-stitch, and more!

On the late afternoon I visited, there were many women filing into the shop as it opened. Turns out they were there for a knitting and crochet workshop! So lovely to see she offers that for her local community.

And if you live near or in Seville, or happen to be visiting, go and have a look! It’s well worth the trip. She speaks Spanish and English and would be happy to help.

And now for a project update…

You may be wondering if I bought some yarn while I was at Mercedes’ store… And of course I did? Would I be a knitter if I hadn’t? 😉

I got a skein of Katia Merino Classic (DK weight, 52% Merino, 48% Acrylic.)

Isn’t the rich shade of magenta just gorgeous?

As it’s winter here, and it’s quite cold, I decided to knit a hat with it (I have a scarf it’ll go with beautifully!) I also chose to make my own design instead of following a pattern. It’s fun to knit something different every so often!

So, of course, I started the brim with the 2x2 rib stitch.

For the main part of the hat, I then chose the bamboo stitch for my hat design.

I remember many years ago knitting a cozy and squishy infinity scarf using the bamboo stitch when living in Japan. I was surrounded by bamboo groves on the mountains. It seemed apt. I love the look and texture! Don’t you?

To add some visual interest, I’ve interspersed some purl stitch rows throughout. It’s also going to be slouchy, which I love.

There was enough yarn left over to knit some fingerless mitts. I used a thumb gusset and I’m yet to master the picked up stitches to complete the thumb section. I still had holes on either side of the picked up stitches, so I sewed them up instead.

I tried out an i-cord bind off at the top of the hand section as an alternative to 2x2 ribbing I’ve used before. The i-cord edge is not as stretchy as ribbing. I’ve only noticed that as I tested out wearing the finished mitts when I was using my computer.

I’m also dreaming of all the things I could make this year…

That’s the beauty of January. So many possibilities stretch out ahead of you, and they’re exciting to contemplate… I have to admit, sometimes though, all those possibilities get a little overwhelming!

So, here’s a tentative list of some ideas for what I could make next.

• I’m still eyeing the possibility of making a Fair Isle Sweater.

• Related to the above, I really enjoyed making my top-down Caramel Cardigan a few years ago. I’d love to make another garment.

• Last year, I started trying to learn to knit some gloves. My goodness, it was challenging, but I love my brain being stretched in new knitting directions! Perhaps I could come back to it.

It’d be interesting to come back to this next year and see how I went!

After a few false starts, I’ve found my rhythm and created the Architectural Hat by Rina Kim in a short amount of time (in less time than I’ve knitted other hats!)

It’s been an easy repeat to memorize and that sped things up. I wasn’t having to refer to the instructions every 5 minutes!

I’m fond of textural fabrics, they add interest to a design.

I’ve been dreaming of what to knit next, as most of you will resonate with. The thing that struck me (again) is the sheer number of designs out there!

And they keep on coming…

As knitters, we’re so fortunate to have so much choice but I’m experiencing decision fatigue.

My recent attempts to use up the leftover yarn in my small stash, meant I had specific amounts to use up. That led me to finding designs which I had enough or near enough yarn for which made things easier.

Then I came across a colorwork sock design I’m swooning over, Zanete Knits’ Rhubarb & Custard socks.

The diamond colorwork design looks stunning and I’m keen to try the honeycomb brioche heel flap. The name, Rhubarb and Custard, evokes memories of the dessert my maternal grandmother (Mama) made when I was little.

Mama grew Rhubarb in her vegetable garden and made custard from custard powder and skim milk. She always made her own skim milk from powder to use in cooking and add to her cups of tea. I don’t ever remember seeing a bottle or carton of milk in her fridge.

She often flavored the cooked Rhubarb with fresh orange peel which is a combination I still love now. The custard wasn’t as rich as using full fat milk, so I found it a little watery, but I never said no to it! I love fruit desserts.

I wonder what Mama would think of the custard I make for special occasions? (Made with full fat milk, pouring cream and vanilla bean.)

Writing about this is making me want some Rhubarb and custard right now!

I’m searching for sock yarn that I’d like to try with this design. The yarns mentioned by Zanete Knits (West Green Loft Yarns Swirl and Botanical Yarns 100% Non Superwash Merino) aren’t available.

I’d also like to try out using 9-inch circular needles for the first time.’s post has inspired me to give them a go.

I’m excited by these socks and the new techniques I’ll learn!

A while back I talked about receiving the latest Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide: No. 28 - Renewal. The designs by Norah Gaughan are delightful.

I’m in awe of how much work has gone into them!

The Bolin Cardigan looks so comfortable yet stylish. The large cable panel running down each sleeve is an elegant accent. The loose fit also appeals to me.

The inspiration for the design was Jane Matilda Bolin, the first Black woman to graduate from Yale Law School who later became a Judge.

Have you ever knitted a long cardigan or coat? It looks like many hours of knitting would go into a project such as the Addams Cardigan. So worth it for the warmth and blissful comfort it would provide!

The suggested fibers are a blend of 50% wool/25% viscose/25% Alpaca and 70% mohair/30% silk. Jane Addams, committed to social change for women and the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, inspired the design.

I love the texture of the Jacobs cardigan with only knits and purls and no buttons!

And a matching hat for the Jacobs cardigan. A lovely ensemble for the upcoming colder months in the northern hemisphere.

And how clever is the thumb opening on the Austen Mitts that follows the line of the cables?

I’d love to know which design spoke to you. One day I’d love to knit the Addams Cardigan.

I’ve finished the knitting the cushion cover. I researched a few ideas on how to close the ends, which in my case are at the top and the bottom. I opted to use the mattress stitch. It took a few tries to get it right. I’m pleased with how neat the finish is.

I’m still on a mission to use up yarn that’s leftover. There’s enough of the white Mighty Stitch yarn to knit a hat. I researched patterns on Ravelry that mentioned worsted weight yarn and 200 yards.

I found a revised hat pattern by Rina Kim: the Architectural Hat.

It uses a simple pattern repeat with only knit and purl rows and ribbing rows that provide texture.

I’m not sure where my knitting brain went because I made errors on two attempts to start. There were too many stitches the first time and I twisted the stitches knitting in the round the second time.

Knitting when tired isn’t a wise idea!

I got it right on the third attempt and found my groove.

Do you also make more mistakes when you feel weary? I knit when I want to relax but if I’m tired, mistakes happen and then it’s not relaxing at all!

“I love the look of heathered yarns, but I'm worried about making something too complex with it. What kinds of projects would you recommend for a beginner using heathered yarn?"

That’s a good point. I'd recommend starting with simpler projects since heathered yarns don't show stitch definition as clearly as solid yarns. This makes them perfect for:

• Basic hats

• Simple sweaters

• Blankets with basic stitch patterns

• Easy accessories

Many small businesses and one-person operations make gorgeous hand-dyed yarn! I’ve never seen such beautiful colors and variety.

Remember, if you're using a darker heathered yarn, it's tricky to count stitches. Start with a lighter colored heathered yarn for your first project.

The great news is because of heathered yarns’ two-tone blended appearance, even the simplest stitches will look interesting!

I’m so excited to be wearing my Chanterelle Pants!

My mind was buzzing with all the new skills I gained during that sewing project. It truly was a labor of love. It took many, many hours!

The sense of achievement is wonderful and some days I’m wearing an outfit that’s all made by me! My favorite combination is my Flow Tee (organic cotton), my Hermoine’s Socks (merino/nylon) and the Chanterelle pants (linen/cotton).

Another FO (Finished Object) is my Summer Stream Scarf by Asami Kawa where I used up my leftover Palette yarn (100% Peruvian wool) by Knit Picks.

With insufficient yarn, I managed a short scarf instead.

The Palette yarn blocks beautifully and the pretty leaf lace shines!

I learned how to graft the two pieces together using the grafting stitch on the purl side. The first attempt I tried grafting on the knit side and it didn’t look right, so I pulled it out.

The join on the wrong side of the fabric is noticeable, but the front is seamless.

In my efforts to use up leftover yarn, I’m knitting a cushion cover using a Norwegian star motif chart.

I’m using the Knit Picks Mighty Stitch yarn from my Mosaic baby blanket.

Getting the tension of my floats has been a journey! I hold the yarns in both hands and pick the stitches (continental style) with my left hand and use the English style to knit the stitches with my right hand.

I’m still a beginner at continental style, so it’s taken a while to get into a rhythm and get the tension right.

I also had an idea to break up the chart repeat with a band of white like the bottom of the design. Why did I think this was a good idea? It looked terrible!

So I added an afterthought life line to the last row of the first chart repeat and ripped back. One benefit of knitting is that you can undo stitches.

Then I continued with the second chart repeat and it looks ten times better!

I’ve been working hard on some other projects that I’ve alluded to in previous emails and can’t wait to share them with you! Not long now…

Chapter 3: Natural Vs. Synthetic Fibers

The Great Fiber Face-Off

Natural fibers come from plants or animals: wool from sheep, cotton from cotton plants, or silk from silkworms. People have used these fibers for thousands of years, and there's something magical about working with materials that connect us to nature and ancient textile traditions.

Synthetic fibers are human-made, from petroleum-based chemicals: acrylic, nylon, and polyester. These fibers emerged in the mid-20th century and revolutionized the textile industry.

Some fibers are a blend of synthetic and natural. Bamboo rayon offers a texture comparable to silk, but much cheaper.

Each fiber has its strengths and weaknesses.

Natural fibers often have a wonderful feel against the skin. The first time I knitted with 100% merino wool it was like working with clouds! Natural fibers are great for regulating body temperature. They absorb moisture without feeling damp, a quality I appreciate in wool socks during long walks.

However, natural fibers are more expensive, and some require special care. I learned this the hard way when I felted my just-finished baby alpaca cowl in the washing machine! Many natural fibers are also susceptible to moth damage.

Synthetic fibers are affordable and low maintenance. They're machine washable and dryable, resist wrinkles, and are less likely to be damaged by insects.

But synthetics aren’t as breathable as natural fibers, which make them uncomfortable in hot weather.

Some people also find synthetic fibers less pleasant to the touch, although modern manufacturing techniques have improved their feel.

In my yarn stash, you'll find a mix. For warm, cozy winter wear, I often reach for wool or alpaca. The natural crimp in these fibers traps air, providing excellent insulation. For summer projects, I love working with cotton or cotton/bamboo.

When I need something durable and easy to care for, like for children's clothes or frequently used household items, I often opt for synthetic/wool blends. Wool/Acrylic yarn is my favorite for blankets that withstand repeated washing.

Chapter 2: Yarn Weights & Categories

Weighing Your Options

One of the most crucial skills you need is understanding yarn weights.

The standardized yarn weight system, developed by the Craft Yarn Council, categorizes yarns into seven categories, from the finest lace weight to the chunkiest jumbo. Each category has a number (0-7) and a name, making it easier for crafters to choose the right yarn for their projects.

But why does yarn weight matter so much? Well…

 The weight of your yarn affects:

1. Gauge and tension: heavier yarns create larger stitches, while finer yarns create smaller ones.So it's crucial to check your gauge, especially when substituting weights!

2. Drape: lighter yarns create a fabric with more drape, while heavier yarns create a stiffer fabric.

3. Warmth: heavier weights create warmer fabrics. So you'll see chunky and bulky yarns recommended for winter wear.

4. Project time: heavier weights work up more quickly than finer yarns. If you're short on time, choosing a heavier weight can help you finish faster.

5. Stitch definition: lighter weights often show off intricate stitches better, while heavier yarns are great for texture.

So, here are the categories! But first… What if you have a yarn you don’t know the weight of, or you’ve lost the label?

This is where you can use the WPI (Wraps Per Inch) method. Here’s how:

• Wrap the yarn around a ruler for 1 inch, not overlapping.

• Count the wraps and compare to the WPI numbers for each category (listed below.)

You can also compare the strand of the mystery yarn to others you know the weight of to see which it matches best.

Now, let’s go into each of the categories in detail.

Category 0: Lace

The finest of them all: perfect for creating delicate shawls, doilies, and intricate lace. When I first attempted a lace weight shawl, it was a humbling experience! Despite its challenges, the results are stunning.

• AKA: Thread, Cobweb

• Wraps per inch (WPI): 30-40+

• Knitting gauge: 33-40 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 32-42 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 1.5-2.25mm (US 000-1)

• Recommended hook size: 1.6-1.4mm (Steel 6, 7, 8)

Pros

• Creates delicate fabric

• Excellent for intricate designs

• Lightweight and airy

Cons

• Difficult to work with, especially for beginners

• Projects take longer to complete

• Mistakes are more noticeable

Category 1: Super Fine

A favorite among sock knitters and it's also great for baby items and lightweight garments. I adore using this weight for shawls. The drape is unbeatable!

• AKA: Fingering, Sock, Baby

• WPI: 14-30

• Knitting gauge: 27-32 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 21-32 single crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 2.25-3.25mm (US 1-3)

• Recommended hook size: 2.25-3.5mm (B-1 to E-4)

Pros

• Perfect for warm weather items

Cons

• May be too delicate for high-wear items

Category 2: Fine

Fine weight yarn is versatile, and it's my go-to for lightweight sweaters and cardigans. The fabric it creates isn't too heavy, not too light. Perfect for year-round wear.

• AKA: Sport, Baby

• WPI: 12-18

• Knitting gauge: 23-26 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 16-20 single crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 3.25-3.75mm (US 3-5)

• Recommended hook size: 3.5-4.5mm (E-4 to 7)

Pros

• Balances between detail and speed

• Good for layering pieces

Cons:

• Split more easily than heavier weights

• May not be warm enough for cold weather garments

Category 3: Light

DK weight isn’t too heavy, not too light, making it perfect for a wide range of projects. I find it great for colorwork. Great stitch definition for intricate patterns without being too bulky.

• AKA: DK (Double Knit), Light Worsted

• WPI: 11-15

• Knitting gauge: 21-24 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 12-17 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 3.75-4.5mm (US 5-7)

• Recommended hook size: 4.5-5.5mm (7 to I-9)

Pros

• Works up faster than finer weights

• Great stitch definition for texture

Cons

• May be too warm for some summer garments

• Not as warm as heavier weights for winter wear

Category 4: Medium

Often considered the "standard" yarn weight, and for good reason. It's versatile, easy to work with, and creates a fabric that's perfect for everything from sweaters to afghans. Beginners should always start with worsted weight yarn.

• AKA: Worsted, Aran

• WPI: 9-12

• Knitting gauge: 16-20 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 11-14 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 4.5-5.5mm (US 7-9)

• Recommended hook size: 5.5-6.5mm (I-9 to K-10½)

Pros

• Easy to work with

• Creates a sturdy, warm fabric

Cons

• Can be too warm for summer garments

• May not have the delicate drape of lighter weights

Category 5: Bulky

A favorite for quick projects and warm, cozy garments. I love using it for winter accessories like hats and scarves.

• AKA: Chunky, Craft, Rug

• WPI: 6-9

• Knitting gauge: 12-15 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 8-11 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 5.5-8mm (US 9-11)

• Recommended hook size: 6.5-9mm (K-10½ to M-13)

Pros

• It work up so quickly, it's‌ instant gratification!

• Great for home decor items

Cons

• Can be too warm for some garments

• May be too bulky for detailed stitch patterns

Category 6: Super Bulky

It works up quickly and creates a thick, warm fabric. I once knitted a blanket with super bulky yarn in a single weekend. Talk about a satisfying project!

• AKA: Roving

• WPI: 5-6

• Knitting gauge: 7-11 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 5-9 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 8-12.75mm (US 11-17)

• Recommended hook size: 9-15mm (M-13 to Q)

Pros

• Great for statement pieces and texture

Cons

• Can be overwhelming in garments

• Limited stitch pattern options because of bulk

Category 7: Jumbo

Perfect for extreme knitting and crochet, and arm knitting. Not my usual choice, but working with it occasionally is fun!

• WPI: 1-4

• Knitting gauge: 6 stitches or fewer per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 1-5 single crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 12.75mm+ (US 17 and larger)

• Recommended hook size: 15mm+ (Q and larger)

Pros

• Great for bold, statement pieces

Cons

• Limited use in everyday projects

• Can be challenging to handle

• Often expensive per project because of the amount needed

Eyelash, ribbon, or other textured yarns rarely fit into weight categories. When working with these:

• Look at the label for recommended hook or needle sizes.

• Consider holding them together with a plain yarn of known weight.

• Always make a gauge swatch, as novelty yarns can behave unpredictably.

Don't be afraid to experiment with different weights to see what you like best!

I’ve been mindful of using up the balls of different fibers I’ve got left over from past yarn tastings. I completed my Sophie Scarf by PetiteKnit in Andean Treasure (100% Baby Alpaca, DK weight) and have been wearing it regularly.

The popularity of this design surprised me. When I first saw it, it didn't inspire me to knit it, as I wasn't sure if I would wear a skinny scarf.

But this yarn's softness was perfect for my bare neck!

The i-cord edge on both sides looks great and the decreases and increases meld into the garter stitch. It’s a clever design and quick and fun to knit.

I had more yarn in my stash to use up: Palette (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, fingering weight.) Here are the notes from my yarn tasting:

My latest knitted swatch is in Palette yarn (the Finnley Heather colorway, fingering weight, 100% Peruvian Highland Wool.) 

I often wonder how they choose the color names and descriptions. Whoever writes them for Knit Picks does a wonderful job!

Here’s what they say about Finnley Heather:

“Finnley Heather is a complex mix of heathered greys that range from cream to a medium ash and taupe grey, along with subtle hints of a darker charcoal grey. Pairing together a warmer cream with a range of greys makes Finnley Heather the ideal, shade-shifting grey that works with a range of colors.”

The thin strand of Palette has tiny fibers that stick out. They show up more when the fabric isn’t washed or blocked.

Having just knitted with the CotLin, I noticed the difference in the feel of working with pure wool. It was rougher, but not unpleasantly so. 

After washing and blocking my swatch, the pure wool fabric is delightful! I love how wool softens and blooms after washing and letting it dry flat.

Back then I was on the hunt for patterns…

I’m searching for patterns to use up the rest of the ball. There’s only 231 yards, so I’m going to have limited options. Any suggestions?

Recently I was looking through my digital knitting design collection and found a lace scarf by Asami Kawa. It’s called the Summer Stream Scarf (a free download on Ravelry).

I figured I could knit a short version with the rest of the Palette yarn. It’s going to end up a very short version! 🤣

I’ve got another small ball I created from unraveling the original swatch. It probably won’t be enough to match the other side's length. We’ll see!

I’m eager to see the lace design reveal its beauty after blocking. I’ve enjoyed working with this yarn. I adore the smell of pure wool. It’s a little rougher straight from the ball but when it’s washed and blocked, it softens.

And for those who’ve got in touch to ask about my secret baby blanket…

I was thrilled when I got the notification on my phone to say it arrived safely in the United States! I messaged my friend to ask her if she’d checked her mailbox and at that moment she’d not been out yet to collect the mail.

I asked her to go out and see if the package arrived.

The next message I got was my friend was holding the blanket in her arms. 😍😍 It filled my heart with joy to see she absolutely loved it!

My friend chose the colors, and I selected Knit Picks Mighty Stitch yarn in the colorways Mulberry and Cream. It’s a blend of 80% acrylic and 20% superwash wool, so it’s lovely and soft. And, it’s machine washable and dryable, which makes it easier for my friend to clean and dry the blanket.

I wanted to knit a mosaic design, and I found this blanket on Purl Soho’s website. I used US 8 (5.00mm) needles, and it knitted up splendidly.

I’m thrilled with how it turned out!

In keeping with the theme of using up yarn from previous projects, I’m going to knit a pillow cover with the rest of the Mighty Stitch yarns.

This time a stranded colorwork design which I’m hunting for.

And here’s the latest on my Chanterelle Pants project.

Wow! These pants are a labor of love! I’ve spent hours on my days off to sew my Chanterelle Pants. When I last updated you, I was up to cutting the pieces out of the fabric and the interfacing.

On my recent day off, I sewed the front and back pockets, then sewed them onto the front and back leg pieces. I was pleased with how they turned out.

I learned new skills about the finishes required for pockets using the interfacing for reinforcement.

As I worked through the instructions, memories of sewing tips my maternal grandmother (Mama) shared with me when I was little came flooding back.

I used bright colored thread sewn through the pattern piece, then in through the fabric pieces below. I cut the threads and removed the paper piece to mark the placements for the back pockets. It’s a nifty trick!

My youngest son (who’s a whizz at sewing) showed me the technique for sewing the crotch by putting one leg inside out and inserting that into the other leg that’s also turned inside out. Then lining up the two inside leg seams and sewing along the crotch. The technique is sewing wizardry!

Though it was hard to focus on following his instructions with my husband in the background singing ‘you put one leg in, and one leg out…’ 😂

The next step is to add in the elastic for the waistband and add the cuffs to the bottom of the legs.

I’ll forever more appreciate the time and effort taken for handmade pants!

Will I finish these pants before my next Fiber Friday? That’s my aim because I’m keen to wear them! 😉

I’ve been listening to a book where the cheese is as important as the mystery…

As you may remember, a while ago, I listened to the first book in the Follet Valley Mystery series by Ian Moore, Death & Croissants.

I really enjoyed that one, so now, I’m listening to the second book in the series, called Death & Fromage. It’s great so far! Here’s the description:

“Running a B&B in the Val de Follet means nothing exciting ever happens to Richard, and really that's the way he likes it.

Until scandal erupts in the nearby town of Saint-Sauver, when its famous restaurant is downgraded from three Michelin stars to two. The restaurant is shamed, the town is in shock, and the leading goat cheese supplier drowns himself in one of his own pasteurization tanks. Or does he?

“How do they make tweed yarn?”

I adore tweed yarns! They add such interesting texture to an otherwise plain knitting design. I did some research, so here’s an excerpt from my updated post on tweed yarn about the making process:

• Wool is dyed in various colors according to the desired tweed pattern.

• Dyed wool is mixed to specific recipes to achieve the characteristic tweed color blends. The blended wool is carded again to ensure even distribution of colors.

• Small, textured elements called 'neps' or 'nups' are added to the wool blend for additional texture and visual interest.

• The prepared wool is spun into yarn using traditional spinning methods or modern machinery. The spun yarn is plied (multiple strands twisted together) for strength and consistency.

• The plied yarn may undergo additional treatments, such as steaming or brushing, to enhance its texture.

• Quality control inspections are performed to ensure the yarn meets specifications.

• The finished tweed yarn is wound into skeins and sent to yarn stores!

As I mentioned last week, I attended a fascinating artist’s talk by Kate Just, and a knitting/crocheting circle for her Conversation Piece artwork.

It was hosted as part of Residue + Response, the 5th Tamworth Textiles Triennial (a curation of works by textile artists from across Australia.)

I so enjoyed attending the event, and the exhibition was just fabulous.

I’m so glad I got to see the exhibition! It was such an inspiring experience.

As I mentioned last week, Ann Shayne and Kay Gardiner, the founders of Modern Daily Knitting have kindly sent me a copy of their latest Field Guide.

It’s No. 28, and it’s called Renewal, featuring designs by Norah Gaughan:

“What happens when Norah Gaughan, the knitwear legend, pares it all back? These five designs will renew your love of knitting: three cardigans—long, medium, and short. Plus, two clever accessories. Distilled garments that are filled with small moments of joy to knit.”

The book is full of beautiful photographs, it was a joy to read and flip through.

As you can see in the photo above, the structure of the book is…

First the three cardigans designed by Norah Gaughan: Bolin, Addams, & Jacobs, and the two accessories: Jacobs Hat and Austen Mitts. They finish off with all special techniques and abbreviations used in the designs.

The designs all feature Moden Daily Knitting’s newest yarn: Jane.

As they describe it:

“As eternal Anglophiles, we wanted to celebrate British wool by making a yarn in England, with the help of talented yarnmakers in Yorkshire. The base is a blend of British wools: Falkland merino and Masham. The gray-taupe base makes our palette of 11 colors deep and nuanced.”

It’s DK weight, 75% Falkland Wool, 25% Masham Wool, and 125 yds (114 m).

Aren’t the colorways just gorgeous! And the warmth and sturdiness of the wool blend is perfect for the fast-approaching colder months.

I think it’s a beautifully produced book, the designs are gorgeous, so it’d be a perfect addition to your knitting library.

Thanks to , who’s going to knit up her treasured Vicuña yarn using the Sophie Scarf design, I thought I’d try it out too!

It’s amazing how popular this design is, judging by the Ravelry stats.

I used up my ball of Andean Treasure DK 100% Baby Alpaca I did a yarn tasting swatch up with a while ago.

It’s blocked, dried, and ready to wear! If you’re looking for a quick, satisfying, and stylish knit, I’d highly recommend it.

If you haven’t heard of Modern Daily Knitting and their lovely field guides, well, do I have something exciting to share with you!

Ann Shayne and Kay Gardiner, the founders, describe their field guides as:

“Little books that explore the big world of knitting. It’s the series that’s captivating knitters all over.”

They’ve released 27 guides so far, on everything from openwork designs by Amy Christoffers (No. 6) to sock knitting (No. 11 & No. 27, featuring Fatimah Hinds.)

And now, they’ve just released No. 28: Renewal, featuring designs by Norah Gaughan, and they were kind enough to send me a copy!

Here’s what the theme of this means:

As I mentioned last week, my sons and I attended a fiber artists’ talk and knitting/crochet circle as part of a fiber arts exhibition at a local art gallery.

Kate Just, the artist, was fascinating to listen to!

Like I’m sure many of you reading this, she was inspired to learn to knit by her mother, who knitted each day to relax after work.

She talked about how you can pick up a craft often by just observing others in your life doing it, something I resonated with. I’m a visual learner, after all!

Kate Just also discussed craft as a creative linage of women, and how when she participates in fiber arts, she feels connected to her creative ancestors.

All those concepts inspired her collaborative projects, like the Conversation Piece featured in the exhibition we went to. Creativity is a beautiful way to connect with others, and that showed in the knitting/crochet circle!

There were fascinating discussions we had. As she mentioned, all of us knitting or crocheted acted as a ‘social lubricant’, leading to great conversations with people that might’ve otherwise been strangers.

When she finished her talk to allow for questions from the participants, I asked her what she saw as the difference between an ‘artist’ and a ‘maker’ who both work with fiber art, if any.

Kate Hall spoke about how ‘craft’ is often artificially separated from art, and through her work, she tries to bridge the gap between the two.

She does this through another large theme in her work: the exploration of ‘perception’, and how our assumptions shape how we perceive artworks.

One way she plays with this was an exhibition of canvases displayed on a gallery wall, par for the course, but only when you got closer did they reveal themselves to be knitted.

She also made incredible, large sculptures displayed in exhibitions of similar works, but unlike the glass, metal, plastic, or wooden makeup of those items, she machine-knitted hers. The result is extraordinary!

I’m making slow, but steady sewing progress on my Chanterelle Pants! I’ll have more to show you soon…

I recently started knitting the Sophie Scarf design by Mette Wendelboe Okkels from PetiteKnit, a Danish designer. Here’s what she said about her creation:

“The Sophie Scarf is worked back and forth in one piece, from tip to tip in garter stitch with built-in i-cord edges. The smaller size Sophie Scarf reaches around the neck once, while the larger size can wrap around the neck twice.”

Taking a look at the stats on Ravelry, the Sophie scarf was very popular! 19,541 projects, in 5,085 queues!

It’s a skinny scarf, perfect for one of my yarn tastings from Knit Picks. To make it, I’m using their Andean Treasure (100% Baby Alpaca, DK weight.) It’s so lovely and soft, and the stitch definition is lovely.

Recently my sons and I attended an artist talk at a local art gallery as part of an exhibition Residue + Response, the 5th Tamworth Textiles Triennial (a curation of works by textile artists from across Australia.)

I had the pleasure of listening to Kate Just, a feminist artist renowned for her innovative use of knitting to address pressing social issues.

As I entered the gallery, a massive length of crocheted and knitting squares, in yellow of all shades, was on display.

The Conversation Piece is a project where participants knit and crochet a large yellow fabric together.

“It celebrates the collective crafting textiles and invites people of all ages, and skill levels to join in. The project creates a living record of collective crafting, conversation, and learning.”

I reflected the people involved and the stories each square held.

Those of us who attended the talk picked up some yellow yarn, and either knitted or crocheted our contribution while we listened to Kate.

I combined crocheting and knitting with a crocheted border.

My youngest son crocheted a square of single crochet.

My eldest (typical for him) cast on far too many stitches, and attempted to do single ribbing, but realized he’d somehow done seed stitch instead. He still enjoyed it, despite only completing a small rectangle within the time.

The Conversation Piece artwork is already 12 meters long! Kate said she’s aiming for thirty, at least!

It was fascinating to learn about Kate’s creative process and the impact of the Conversation Piece.

My brain was buzzing with all the preparation for my Chanterelle Pants project.
I cut out the pattern pieces from what I’m terming ‘a giant sewing jigsaw puzzle.’

From this…

To this! It only took several hours!

The instructions recommended tracing the pieces onto tracing paper.

I purchased my materials at a local Spotlight store: tracing paper, navy blue cotton linen, interfacing, pins, thread, and elastic.

The weight of the tracing paper surprised me. In my past sewing experiences with store-bought patterns, the paper was more like tissue paper. The Birch tracing paper is a little heavier than the printing paper. I used the tracing paper for the back and front pieces. I’m leaving the rest as they are.

The change in the cotton/linen was significant after being washed and dried. Straight from the bolt, it was very stiff. Now it’s more flowy!

Cutting the pattern pieces out, going to the store, tracing and cutting out, washing and drying the fabric took many hours.

There’s nothing quick about this project! I’ve got a greater appreciation for what it takes to sew your own clothes!

By next Friday, I’ll have more to show you. My plan is to cut out the fabric pieces and interfacing and begin sewing. I’m excited!

On the knitting front, I finished my cloudlike cowl (the Welted Cowl design by Jane Richmond, using Aloft by Knit Picks in lace weight.) The mohair/silk fabric is incredibly soft and light. It’s hardly noticeable when I wear it.

I’m grateful natural fibers don’t irritate my skin. I imagine the fluffiness of mohair wouldn’t suit everyone.
