Taz The Dog: ’s Pet

Taz is a rescue dog and he's been filling our days with love for 15 years (he'll be 16 at the end of August).

We almost lost him in November to a particularly nasty bacteria that lives in the soil and comes to the surface when there's a lot of rain so we're extremely grateful for every single day extra we have with him.

His hearing has gone and his sight has deteriorated with old age although he's still active and mobile, loves going out, but does enjoy a stint in his dog carriage when he's tired.

He lets us know when he's recovered his strength by trying to jump out of the carriage! And still loves playing although he does it laying down these days :)

He can't jump up into his chair like he used to, so we recently bought him his own dog sofa which he loves!

He's very protective at home and has a deep bark that scares anyone off (he's really gentle!) and scares off bigger dogs when we're out walking.

So many funny memories over the years it's hard to pick one.

Maybe the first time he saw and played in snow which he absolutely loved (we don't get much snow on the south coast UK!).

You’re never too old to have fun! 😊

While Emily and her family already have three cocker spaniels, recently, they welcomed the most adorable puppies!

The Cocker Spaniels: ’s Dogs

The puppies are four weeks old, and we have three adult dogs, Suzie, Spirit and Steve who are seven, four and one respectively.

Spirit and Steve are mum and dad to the puppies.

Left to right below, Steve, Suzie, Spirit.

They’re all English cocker spaniels and they’re always excited to see us, their favorite trick is to pick stuff up and bounce about with it.

They often wander about with their blankets, and they are ALWAYS picking up socks and pants from the floor and wandering around with them!

The pups are still very young but starting to show their personalities and little Lexi, the smallest chocolate pup is an explorer.

We were in the garden trying to get good photos of them and I was bent over close to the ground with my camera.

They all tried to crawl inside the opening of my top that was hanging down just at the right height. 🤩🤣

Aren’t they just adorable? 🥰

When I asked Hannah if she’d be willing to share Winston’s story here on Pet Of The Week, I was delighted when she said yes.

So, over to you, Hannah…

Winston The Dog: Hannah’s Pet

Age: 13 years, 5 months.

Favorite Toys: In Winston's youth he loved anything plush with a squeaker inside - the more stuffing the better (as it’d end up everywhere around the house). He isn't interested in anything these days though.

Likes: Snacks, pats, walks, car rides, the river.

Dislikes: Stairs (they’re becoming more difficult in his old age), being left behind, and not being able to venture everywhere with Mum throughout the day.

A Favorite Memory: I went on a day trip to Lake Tyrrell with some friends earlier this year. It was so windy that day!

As we were walking through the salt lake, my bunnings hat blew off.

I don't remember the last time I saw Winston spot something and chase after it with such intent and speed, but he did!

We were all amazed - the old boy still has a lot of go in him.

Recently I took Winston on a solo holiday to Hepburn Springs/Daylesford.

When we went and checked out Lake Daylesford, while other people's dogs would walk up to the lake to get a drink, Winston instead decided to get right in.

He loves cooling off by getting into the water & just laying himself down in the water. (Mind you, it was quite a cold day!)

Winston certainly loves the water! 😊

Dusty The Dog: Dante’s Pet

Age: 9 months.

Favorite toys: our socks! Also, all Mr Pickles’ toys, and anything he can play tug of war with :)

Likes: playing tug of war and chasey, wrestling with Mr Pickles, going for walks, belly rubs, being with us, digging holes, and meeting new people on walks.

Dislikes: Being alone, and the broom!

A short, funny memory: Dusty is very cute and when he used to try and catch things when he was little, his front paws reminded us of a platypus!

When he was very small and got wet, he looked more like a ferret!

And he used to fall out of his bed when he was tiny and just sleep on all sorts of funny positions. 💜 He also loves being upside down.

He seems like such a happy and excitable puppy. 😊

Mr Pickles The Cat: Allegra’s Pet

Age: He's 1.

His favorite toys are a felt mouse, laser pointer, string and ribbons, and balls.

Likes: food!! All food is loved by Mr Pickles :) He loves Allegra a lot too, and loves going outside with his harness on. Another thing Pickles likes is hunting moths!

Dislikes: dad! Also new people, loud noises, and when he gets his meals late. :)

One time he went to grab a toy in his mouth, but he accidentally bit his own foot!

And last week he had an off day and kept falling off things: the top of the shower, a bench he tried to jump up on, and our gazebo outside! Luckily, he was fine, and he was still thinking about where he could climb up to all day!

If there’s one thing almost all pets have in common, it’s their love of food. 😊

Here she shares Trixie’s story.

Trixie The Dog: Maggie Grey’s Dog

Trixie is a nine-ish-year-old Dachshund. We’re not exactly sure of her age, as we didn't have her from 'new'.

We were introduced to her (and her lovely previous owner) by the Cinnamon Trust which provides walkers for dogs whose owners are unwell and unable to take them out.

We walked her for some time before, very sadly, her owner died. His family were very keen on Trixie coming to live with us and we were easily persuaded.

She’s very attached to a shabby monkey - he’s certainly her favorite toy. I keep having to sew his nose back on as it’s Trixie's favorite nibbling area.

Her favorite thing has to be people. She loves everyone and always ignores the dogs we meet on walks in favor of their owners.

Needless to say, the family, especially grandchildren, are high on her list of likes.

Her favorite place is the old sofa in the conservatory. She likes to sit on 'her' cushion, right in the middle.

The local pet shop is another big like. This may be because they flagrantly bribe her with 'Better Bones' chews.

Trixie is very greedy, and I think she would count eating as one of her favorite hobbies. She is also proud of the results and likes to treat visitors to a view of her tum. We’re working on the diet and it’s slowly reducing in size.

Trixie takes a keen interest in my work, as you can see. I think this is because she’s convinced that food is involved somewhere.

Dislikes: Vets and the dog-washing shop.

One of her funniest tricks concerns her dislike of peas.

She carefully separates them from the meat in her dinner by tucking them away in a corner of her mouth while eating. She then fires them back into the bowl like cannonballs when she has finished licking the bowl clean.

Trixie has been a wonderful addition to our household - we also see more of the grandchildren now!

Trixie certainly has a few tricks up her sleeve! 😊

Scarlett The Cat: ’s Cat

We have several pets: two dogs, 14 chickens, two pigs, and the most obvious choice for your feature, Scarlett The Craft Room Squatter, with whom I’m engaged in a long term adverse possession battle over the true ownership of “my” space.

Scarlett is 3, and was a rescue kitty during the Great Mouse Plague of 2021. We’ve always been dog people, but desperate times and all that.

The theory, however, came crashing down when we watched in horror as she heard a mouse, sat up and watched it run across the room and promptly lay back down and continue her nap. Apparently she has not heard of “earning her keep”!

Her favorite toy is the little rope on a stick to chase around, in an effort to keep her hoomans entertained and wear them out so they get a good nights sleep ready to wake before dawn for Breakfast Duty.

She likes undertaking quality assurance audits of every bed and every couch quilt in the house, and especially likes playing with the Mama Hooman’s yarn. It’s fun AND pretty.

Her most favorite thing though is laying claim to various surfaces in the craft room (the more inconvenient the better), and scowling in disgust when it is suggested she may like to move.

She dislikes the German shepherd, dry food for breakfast, and being awake in the day time. She especially dislikes being made to wait for dinner until a) 6pm and b) the dogs have been fed first.

Cats always want you to know who’s in charge. 😊

’s Many Cats

Cats have always came into my life by chance. Usually, they wandered into our yard and we took them in.

We currently have a 21-year-old black cat, named Rosebud, she was dropped off by a friend who was on her way to the Animal Shelter with Rose and her litter mate, who we named Thorn.

In 2020, during lockdown, a friend sent me a photo of her cat’s litter of silver tortoise shell kittens. I didn’t need any more pets.

At that point, we had our son’s two male cats (Erle and Bunsen) who lived with us while he and his wife were deployed overseas with their dogs.

They were scheduled to return in the Spring. I was actually looking forward being almost cat-less.

Nevertheless, I asked my friend to set aside two female kittens for me.

Our old girl, Rosebud, tolerated the boy cats but she despised the new kittens. Eventually, she warmed up to them and now lets them snuggle with her.

Our kid’s homecoming was delayed until summer (because of Covid), so we had a houseful for a few weeks.

The old cats ignored the rampaging kittens (who were convinced that my loom was their play ground). They quickly made it clear silver torties have as much tort-itude as black and brown tortoiseshell cats.

They are a source of constant entertainment, still playful and very sweet.

So many cats! I’m sure they all love being with June in her home. 😊

Bailey The Cat: ’s Pet

His name is Bailey. He’s fourteen years old.

He’s quite a character as he’ll eat the food off your plate if you aren’t paying attention! He always sleeps next to me at night and in the morning will start walking all over me, back and forth, to get me up and feed him. 😂

He doesn’t like loud noises, especially when the vacuum is going.

He’s never been one for cat toys but enjoys tearing up the box springs for my bed, using it as his personal cat tree.

He’s definitely my fur baby and I cuddle him probably more than he likes. 😂

I’m sure Bailey appreciates the cuddles when he’s in the mood! 😊

Olive The Cat: ’s Pet

Age: ~6.5-7 years, I don’t know her exact age, she was rescued as a young cat, but past the kitten stage.

Favorite toys: She loves string of any type and lasers. Her favorite toy right now is a small ball of Rambouillet yarn I spun. She loves to pounce on it and chase it around.

Likes: Olive loves head rubs, sunshine, treats, and classical music.

Dislikes: Olive dislikes baths, car rides, and dogs.

Funny memory: Olive is a great cat and one of her best qualities is she doesn’t get into things she shouldn’t or knock stuff over.

But at the start of the lockdowns in 2020, I went in to the bathroom and discovered she had rolled all the toilet paper off the roll! I laughed and scolded her, “No! We need that!” as there was a huge shortage at the time.

I love how Olive likes classical music! So do I. 😊

Princess Chonky, Mittens, and Socks the cats, plus Cheeky the hamster: Julie Crawford’s pets.

We had two senior cats pass away in 2023, and a little while after that I thought we could foster a cat in need.

Princess Chonky came to us through the Toronto Cat Rescue, after she had been abandoned. We think she’s about 9 years old, and she’s really sweet and just wants to sit next to you, and lay in the sunshine.

A month after keeping Princess Chonky, these two brothers were found as 7 week old kittens without their mom, and we started to foster them through Toronto Cat Rescue. They were so tiny when they came to us!

You’d think Princess Chonky would love them, but sadly she hates the kittens. I think she gets jealous. But they have each other and are happy, bouncy cats, currently about 9 months old.

Mittens is a Polydactyl, which means he has extra toes (extra beans!) and you can hear him coming because it's like he's got little tap shoes on.

Socks is a sweetheart. He loves to be near us, and chin scratches are his favourite!

We got Cheeky in 2022, because when my daughter was 4 years old, I was very distracted one day when she asked me about getting a bunny, and somehow I said, 'sure, when you turn 10."

Her animal of choice morphed over the years, and when she turned ten, she chose a hamster and named it Cheeky.

We are all utterly besotted with Cheeky, she is so delightful, and so smart!

We take her out of her cafe every evening so she can have running around time (it's not good for hamsters to just be in their cages for days on end, even if you have a great wheel) and she likes to play with the cats. Seriously!

What a delightful group of pets with such cute names! 😊

Chloe & Kimi - Bonne’s Cats

I’d like to introduce my two cats: Chloe (the Siamese) and Kimi (the black). They’re both rescue cats.

When we got Chloe she was full-grown; probably about 3+ years so would be 12 or 13 now. Kimi was just past kittenhood; guessing around 10 to 12 months and is 5 or 6 now. But both of them still act like kittens much of the time.

Chloe was taken to the vet needing surgery and her owner couldn't afford to pay for it. She asked Joan (the office manager) to find a home for her.

Joan knew one of our cats had died recently and told us about Chloe.

We went in, met her and fell in love.

As soon as she recovered from surgery we brought her home. We think she must have suffered some trauma as a kitten: she was afraid of everything.

She spent the first couple of months hiding in the basement.

With love and treats we got her to agree to let us co-exist in "her" house. After years of coaxing, she has now become a lap cat. In fact, she insists on it!

Kimi was found roaming the streets and taken to the SPCA.

She didn't have any identification - tattoo or chip - and no one came to claim her. She and another cat were both up for adoption when we went looking.

We had a terrible time choosing since they both were so sweet.

When we decided on Kimi the staff said how glad they were we took her because people don't want black cats (imagine!)

When she met Chloe she immediately did the "cute kitten - no threat" thing and Chloe decided we could keep her.

One of their favorite toys is an M&M peanut candy that got dropped on the floor sometime ago. Every so often it goes missing and we have to drop a new one.

The little felt-covered mice from the dollar store get played to death and need replacing regularly. There was, obviously, some discussion about the proper use of yarn (not a cat toy) and for the most part they respect that.

There are also several games they play together but we still haven't worked out what the rules are. Chase, pounce and tumble are all part of the game.

Chloe loves lying on the heat vent in front of the sunroom windows. Even if the heat isn't running - she's always hopeful.

Kimi's most liked thing to do is to wait until Wayne starts to read and then jump on his lap and cover the book.

Chloe hates shark movies but is perfectly ok with dinosaurs(??).

Kimi doesn't have any dislikes - for her everything is either a toy or a taste treat.

For a while after we persuaded Chloe to come out of the basement, she lived in my office. We put her food, water and liter box in there and she was quite content - no intention of being anywhere else.

One evening, late, after Wayne had gone to bed, she came tearing out of the office into the living room, took a flying leap and landed in my lap. No idea what prompted this, but we watched a movie together and had a nice evening.

I do most of my knitting in my comfortable chair in the living room.

The yarn sits on the floor next to me in a yarn box and pulls up as I knit. Kimi seemed fascinated with this and sat on the floor beside the yarn just staring at it.

All was well until I noticed that I had gotten to the end of the skein way before it should have run out and the the end was sopping wet.

A very innocent-looking Kimi was sitting there with an "I wouldn't do a thing like that" expression on her face!

Even though she's more sociable now, Chloe still has no tolerance for what she considers unnecessary people (anything over 2 - specifically, me and Wayne).

She disappears as soon as we think about inviting company and doesn't reappear until everyone is gone. It has gotten so obvious that people are starting to tease me about my "imaginary cat".

These cats have quite the story to tell! They always keep things interesting. 😊

So, here’s my dear friend, Cassandra, to tell his story. Over to her!

Dante The Cat

Age: 18 (he’s a Maine Coon cat.)

Favorite toys: a laser and anything on a string!

Likes: Eating! Catnip, playing outside, car rides, mimicking birds, being patted on his head while he’s eating telling him, "Good boy, Dante!", being in a room to know what is going on, meditation and Reiki time! 😻

Dislikes: Bath time, going to the groomers, another animal in his personal space, when the bathroom door is closed.

A short story about Dante:

I had a really stressful and long day at work.

So, when I came home I started gathering my relaxing tools of music, candles, and crystals to take a hot bath to wash off the day.

I closed the bathroom door completely because I had candles and was afraid of Dante coming in near the flames.

A relaxing bath turned into Dante pawing at the door, profusely meowing at the top of his lungs like he was in danger and in severe pain!

I knew he wasn't, so I turned up the music.

All of a sudden, the meowing and pawing stopped.

And I thought, "thank goodness!"

But a few minutes later, I heard a loud bang on door with the handle moving and door popped open.

It was at this moment I realized how smart Dante was. Low and behold, he’d learned how to successfully open a closed door!

Once he was in, he was silent and nested himself on the toilet seat in my direction. Looking proud, smiling and purring.

So, I closed my eyes to continue to relax.

A short moment later, I see a light flash behind my eyelids.

So, I opened my eyes and saw Dante on the ledge of the tub with the end of his fluffy tail on fire from getting too curious about a candle!

In a split second, he slipped into the tub, not making a sound, quickly jumped out, and ran out of the bathroom in pure embarrassment.

A relaxing bath turned into the Dante show of entertainment!

The good news is he was 100% safe with no injuries. Just burnt singes on his fur on his tail.

Dante has such a beautiful coat, and a cunning personality. 😊

Over to them!

Chloe The Dog

Age: Aged 12 years and is a groodle. Another one of those 'oodles.'

Favorite toys: A green crocodile and a green Kermit the frog. One of these 2 is always presented to guests and family when they enter the home.

Even the tradies get a toy!

Likes: Running at the dog park and sniffing every interesting tree.

Dislikes: Her biggest dislike is people on roaring motorbikes. They send her troppo for a minute and then she calms down.

She can hear them from miles away.

Every time we come home from being away she treats us with disdain for any length of time. But she’s an excellent nurse when one of us is away - the love she gives the 'stay at home'.

Chicory: ’s Dog

• Age: Chicory will turn 9 in July.

• Favorite toy: He doesn’t have a favorite toy, but he absolutely loves to play with a water hose.

• Likes: In no specific order: Chicory loves dogs, people, food and water. He also likes being wise and kind.

• Dislikes: He doesn’t have any major dislikes, except being told he can’t eat anything!

What does he love about the beach? Does he swim?

He just loves water!

He’ll play fetch a stick, if he can or he will play with water any which way. He tries to catch water from the hose and jumps about doing that!

Clyde: ’s Cat

• Age: 16

• Favorite toy: Wind up mouse.

• Loves: Clyde loves warm laps and cuddles, he’s the most loving and talkative cat I’ve ever known.

• Likes: He likes to nap in a tightly fitting cardboard box near my comfy chair or on a pillow under my sewing table, or a pillow near where I paint.

Clyde was wandering at my sister in law’s Lake House but she couldn’t take in a third cat. He latched on to my husband when he was there for a visit.

So he came home to be our second cat.

Our other cat was Bonnie, so Bonnie and Clyde were a team.

Every day with Clyde brings good memories, from a quiet breakfast together until he tucks into bed with me at night while I read.

Here’s to share his story.

Milo: ’ Cat

We’ve often referred to him as our Covid Cat, since we got him from a shelter in December 2019, just a few months before everything shut down. He was about 7 months old then and was oh so adorable in his late-kitten phase.

We often wonder if his life before us was spent with dogs since he plays fetch with a ball of yarn or other item you can throw. He brings it right back to you, plops it on the ground, waiting for you to throw it again! His favorite thing is yarn in any shape or form. This means I have to keep as much of my yarns, hand-spun and otherwise, in Ziploc bags or behind glass shelving.

There have been many mornings I have come downstairs to see my yarn entwined around all the legs of our breakfast nook table AND chairs…nearly woven together as he hopped in and out, over and under all the legs whilst holding the yarn ball in his mouth or just batting it around.

I’m really not sure how he does it, but it is impressive to see his work! 😂

I then spend time on my hands and knees, freeing my yarn from all the legs and winding it back up. Nothing is harmed so I think I just have a cat who appreciates yarn as much as I do!

It can also be quite challenging to sit in a chair knitting with a basket of my yarn on the floor. He will see the strand I’m knitting with and think surely I intend for him to play with it, put it in his mouth and run! Sometimes this does not end well. 😵‍💫

He is our beloved cat who loves to be right in the same room where we are, or being cuddled in our laps!

He also typically sits in a chair at the dining room table while we eat. We wonder if he is making sure we are protected while we eat! I have a feeling if I fed him a bowl of cat food at the table he would eat just like we are eating (only not cat food for us!)

When I set up my spinning wheel, he curls up right underneath and I like to think he enjoys the whir of the wheel as if it were purring.

He is very much an indoor cat who does not even want to go outside as he is a bit on the anxious side and doesn’t like loud noise or the unknown world of the outdoors. We are just fine with that! 💖

I also love drawing Milo, as his markings are so striking! Here’s a sketch of him looking out the window of my studio.

Blake: Carina’s Dog

• Age: 13

• Favorite toys: He doesn't really have a favorite toy. But he loves it when my husband chases him to throw a towel over him. He's a weird little guy.

• Loves: Sleeping, as he’s an old boy now.

• Likes: Going for walks and sniffing all the things.

Dislikes: He doesn’t like going anywhere in the car. He's excited about getting in the car but as soon as the car starts moving, he’s whining and barking.

No fun for any of us!

Funny short memory you’ve shared together:

Blake has never chewed on shoes or ripped anything or stolen food.

Except for that one time, when my husband got a phone call just as he was eating a delicious cookie. He put the cookie down, and before either of us could react, Blake had grabbed it and snarfed it down.

It was so out of character for him we’re still laughing at it years later!

Kitten Kaboodle: Suze’s Cat!

• Age: 13

• Favorite toys: Mousie and JiggyBug (has had them since he was a kitten.)

• Loves: Tuna

• Likes: Me (sometimes) and sleeping.

Dislikes: being picked up, most people, loud noises and me doing anything crafty and not paying him attention. He'll attack my yarn, knock my needles off the table, and sit on my projects, ensuring everything I make has some Kaboodle hair in it forever!

Funny short memory you’ve shared together:

My friends found him meowing loudly for help in an old fishing shack. They sent me a photo asking if I would like a kitten and I couldn't say no.

My favorite memory is how much attitude he gave me when I had to wash and medicate him to treat worms and fleas, even though he was absolutely tiny (at best 4 weeks old). Then I knew he was going to be just fine.

Leo The Sheep

Leo’s start to life was challenging being one of three and the smallest. I’ve heard of Ewes rejecting their young. Every time I read a story like that I’m so moved.

After many tries to get Leo’s mother to accept him, the decision was made to take Leo into the house and cared for him.

As she said: “He spent most of the first 24 hours laying on my chest, covered in a blanket. He was so dang tiny!”

Leo grew up thinking he was human/dog, then a horse, and fell in love with a cow! What a wonderful character Leo is!

Lucy The Sheep

Lucy, now 15 years old, has taken on the role of matron.

She’s excellent at teaching the LGDs (Livestock Guardian Dogs) how to behave and shows them what’s what (a little nip) when she’s displeased with them. 

Mother to many lambs and giver of beautiful fleece over her long years.

A treasured member of the Fat Turkey Farm to be sure and one who’s being well cared for and loved in her old age.

Ah, Leo AKA Leonidas Mac Capt. Jack, Bugger Butt, Turd Head, PITA, and, ultimately, my sweet boy. Leo had a pretty rough start as a baby.
