After living in regional Australia for the past year, my family and I are off traveling again. This time, we’re come to Seville, Spain! While we’ve been to Spain before we’ve never come to this part of the country, so that’s very exciting.

One of my favorite things to do when I visit a new place is…

Going to the local yarn stores, of course!

So, I thought I’d give you a little tour…

I visited Otro Punto Merceria Creativa (which literally translates to Another Point Creative Haberdashery in English), run by the lovely Mercedes.

Most of the yarns she had in stock were from Katia, a yarn manufacturer from Barcelona, Spain, founded in 1951. Many of their yarns have materials sourced from local farmers, spinners, and dyers.

In addition to selling yarns, she offers supplies for quilting, crocheting, knitting, sewing, embroidery, cross-stitch, and more!

On the late afternoon I visited, there were many women filing into the shop as it opened. Turns out they were there for a knitting and crochet workshop! So lovely to see she offers that for her local community.

And now for a project update…

You may be wondering if I bought some yarn while I was at Mercedes’ store… And of course I did? Would I be a knitter if I hadn’t? 😉

I got a skein of Katia Merino Classic (DK weight, 52% Merino, 48% Acrylic.)

Isn’t the rich shade of magenta just gorgeous?

As it’s winter here, and it’s quite cold, I decided to knit a hat with it (I have a scarf it’ll go with beautifully!) I also chose to make my own design instead of following a pattern. It’s fun to knit something different every so often!

So, of course, I started the brim with the 2x2 rib stitch.

For the main part of the hat, I then chose the bamboo stitch for my hat design.

I remember many years ago knitting a cozy and squishy infinity scarf using the bamboo stitch when living in Japan. I was surrounded by bamboo groves on the mountains. It seemed apt. I love the look and texture! Don’t you?

To add some visual interest, I’ve interspersed some purl stitch rows throughout. It’s also going to be slouchy, which I love.

There was enough yarn left over to knit some fingerless mitts. I used a thumb gusset and I’m yet to master the picked up stitches to complete the thumb section. I still had holes on either side of the picked up stitches, so I sewed them up instead.

I tried out an i-cord bind off at the top of the hand section as an alternative to 2x2 ribbing I’ve used before. The i-cord edge is not as stretchy as ribbing. I’ve only noticed that as I tested out wearing the finished mitts when I was using my computer.

I’m also dreaming of all the things I could make this year…

That’s the beauty of January. So many possibilities stretch out ahead of you, and they’re exciting to contemplate… I have to admit, sometimes though, all those possibilities get a little overwhelming!

So, here’s a tentative list of some ideas for what I could make next.

• I’m still eyeing the possibility of making a Fair Isle Sweater.

• Related to the above, I really enjoyed making my top-down Caramel Cardigan a few years ago. I’d love to make another garment.

• Last year, I started trying to learn to knit some gloves. My goodness, it was challenging, but I love my brain being stretched in new knitting directions! Perhaps I could come back to it.

It’d be interesting to come back to this next year and see how I went!

After a few false starts, I’ve found my rhythm and created the Architectural Hat by Rina Kim in a short amount of time (in less time than I’ve knitted other hats!)

It’s been an easy repeat to memorize and that sped things up. I wasn’t having to refer to the instructions every 5 minutes!

I’m fond of textural fabrics, they add interest to a design.

I’ve been dreaming of what to knit next, as most of you will resonate with. The thing that struck me (again) is the sheer number of designs out there!

And they keep on coming…

As knitters, we’re so fortunate to have so much choice but I’m experiencing decision fatigue.

My recent attempts to use up the leftover yarn in my small stash, meant I had specific amounts to use up. That led me to finding designs which I had enough or near enough yarn for which made things easier.

Then I came across a colorwork sock design I’m swooning over, Zanete Knits’ Rhubarb & Custard socks.

The diamond colorwork design looks stunning and I’m keen to try the honeycomb brioche heel flap. The name, Rhubarb and Custard, evokes memories of the dessert my maternal grandmother (Mama) made when I was little.

Mama grew Rhubarb in her vegetable garden and made custard from custard powder and skim milk. She always made her own skim milk from powder to use in cooking and add to her cups of tea. I don’t ever remember seeing a bottle or carton of milk in her fridge.

She often flavored the cooked Rhubarb with fresh orange peel which is a combination I still love now. The custard wasn’t as rich as using full fat milk, so I found it a little watery, but I never said no to it! I love fruit desserts.

I wonder what Mama would think of the custard I make for special occasions? (Made with full fat milk, pouring cream and vanilla bean.)

Writing about this is making me want some Rhubarb and custard right now!

I’m searching for sock yarn that I’d like to try with this design. The yarns mentioned by Zanete Knits (West Green Loft Yarns Swirl and Botanical Yarns 100% Non Superwash Merino) aren’t available.

I’d also like to try out using 9-inch circular needles for the first time.’s post has inspired me to give them a go.

I’m excited by these socks and the new techniques I’ll learn!

A while back I talked about receiving the latest Modern Daily Knitting Field Guide: No. 28 - Renewal. The designs by Norah Gaughan are delightful.

I’m in awe of how much work has gone into them!

The Bolin Cardigan looks so comfortable yet stylish. The large cable panel running down each sleeve is an elegant accent. The loose fit also appeals to me.

The inspiration for the design was Jane Matilda Bolin, the first Black woman to graduate from Yale Law School who later became a Judge.

Have you ever knitted a long cardigan or coat? It looks like many hours of knitting would go into a project such as the Addams Cardigan. So worth it for the warmth and blissful comfort it would provide!

The suggested fibers are a blend of 50% wool/25% viscose/25% Alpaca and 70% mohair/30% silk. Jane Addams, committed to social change for women and the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, inspired the design.

I love the texture of the Jacobs cardigan with only knits and purls and no buttons!

And a matching hat for the Jacobs cardigan. A lovely ensemble for the upcoming colder months in the northern hemisphere.

And how clever is the thumb opening on the Austen Mitts that follows the line of the cables?

I’d love to know which design spoke to you. One day I’d love to knit the Addams Cardigan.

I’ve finished the knitting the cushion cover. I researched a few ideas on how to close the ends, which in my case are at the top and the bottom. I opted to use the mattress stitch. It took a few tries to get it right. I’m pleased with how neat the finish is.

I’m still on a mission to use up yarn that’s leftover. There’s enough of the white Mighty Stitch yarn to knit a hat. I researched patterns on Ravelry that mentioned worsted weight yarn and 200 yards.

I found a revised hat pattern by Rina Kim: the Architectural Hat.

It uses a simple pattern repeat with only knit and purl rows and ribbing rows that provide texture.

I’m not sure where my knitting brain went because I made errors on two attempts to start. There were too many stitches the first time and I twisted the stitches knitting in the round the second time.

Knitting when tired isn’t a wise idea!

I got it right on the third attempt and found my groove.

Do you also make more mistakes when you feel weary? I knit when I want to relax but if I’m tired, mistakes happen and then it’s not relaxing at all!

I’m so excited to be wearing my Chanterelle Pants!

My mind was buzzing with all the new skills I gained during that sewing project. It truly was a labor of love. It took many, many hours!

The sense of achievement is wonderful and some days I’m wearing an outfit that’s all made by me! My favorite combination is my Flow Tee (organic cotton), my Hermoine’s Socks (merino/nylon) and the Chanterelle pants (linen/cotton).

Another FO (Finished Object) is my Summer Stream Scarf by Asami Kawa where I used up my leftover Palette yarn (100% Peruvian wool) by Knit Picks.

With insufficient yarn, I managed a short scarf instead.

The Palette yarn blocks beautifully and the pretty leaf lace shines!

I learned how to graft the two pieces together using the grafting stitch on the purl side. The first attempt I tried grafting on the knit side and it didn’t look right, so I pulled it out.

The join on the wrong side of the fabric is noticeable, but the front is seamless.

In my efforts to use up leftover yarn, I’m knitting a cushion cover using a Norwegian star motif chart.

I’m using the Knit Picks Mighty Stitch yarn from my Mosaic baby blanket.

Getting the tension of my floats has been a journey! I hold the yarns in both hands and pick the stitches (continental style) with my left hand and use the English style to knit the stitches with my right hand.

I’m still a beginner at continental style, so it’s taken a while to get into a rhythm and get the tension right.

I also had an idea to break up the chart repeat with a band of white like the bottom of the design. Why did I think this was a good idea? It looked terrible!

So I added an afterthought life line to the last row of the first chart repeat and ripped back. One benefit of knitting is that you can undo stitches.

Then I continued with the second chart repeat and it looks ten times better!

I’ve been working hard on some other projects that I’ve alluded to in previous emails and can’t wait to share them with you! Not long now…

Chapter 2: Yarn Weights & Categories

Weighing Your Options

One of the most crucial skills you need is understanding yarn weights.

The standardized yarn weight system, developed by the Craft Yarn Council, categorizes yarns into seven categories, from the finest lace weight to the chunkiest jumbo. Each category has a number (0-7) and a name, making it easier for crafters to choose the right yarn for their projects.

But why does yarn weight matter so much? Well…

 The weight of your yarn affects:

1. Gauge and tension: heavier yarns create larger stitches, while finer yarns create smaller ones.So it's crucial to check your gauge, especially when substituting weights!

2. Drape: lighter yarns create a fabric with more drape, while heavier yarns create a stiffer fabric.

3. Warmth: heavier weights create warmer fabrics. So you'll see chunky and bulky yarns recommended for winter wear.

4. Project time: heavier weights work up more quickly than finer yarns. If you're short on time, choosing a heavier weight can help you finish faster.

5. Stitch definition: lighter weights often show off intricate stitches better, while heavier yarns are great for texture.

So, here are the categories! But first… What if you have a yarn you don’t know the weight of, or you’ve lost the label?

This is where you can use the WPI (Wraps Per Inch) method. Here’s how:

• Wrap the yarn around a ruler for 1 inch, not overlapping.

• Count the wraps and compare to the WPI numbers for each category (listed below.)

You can also compare the strand of the mystery yarn to others you know the weight of to see which it matches best.

Now, let’s go into each of the categories in detail.

Category 0: Lace

The finest of them all: perfect for creating delicate shawls, doilies, and intricate lace. When I first attempted a lace weight shawl, it was a humbling experience! Despite its challenges, the results are stunning.

• AKA: Thread, Cobweb

• Wraps per inch (WPI): 30-40+

• Knitting gauge: 33-40 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 32-42 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 1.5-2.25mm (US 000-1)

• Recommended hook size: 1.6-1.4mm (Steel 6, 7, 8)

Pros

• Creates delicate fabric

• Excellent for intricate designs

• Lightweight and airy

Cons

• Difficult to work with, especially for beginners

• Projects take longer to complete

• Mistakes are more noticeable

Category 1: Super Fine

A favorite among sock knitters and it's also great for baby items and lightweight garments. I adore using this weight for shawls. The drape is unbeatable!

• AKA: Fingering, Sock, Baby

• WPI: 14-30

• Knitting gauge: 27-32 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 21-32 single crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 2.25-3.25mm (US 1-3)

• Recommended hook size: 2.25-3.5mm (B-1 to E-4)

Pros

• Perfect for warm weather items

Cons

• May be too delicate for high-wear items

Category 2: Fine

Fine weight yarn is versatile, and it's my go-to for lightweight sweaters and cardigans. The fabric it creates isn't too heavy, not too light. Perfect for year-round wear.

• AKA: Sport, Baby

• WPI: 12-18

• Knitting gauge: 23-26 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 16-20 single crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 3.25-3.75mm (US 3-5)

• Recommended hook size: 3.5-4.5mm (E-4 to 7)

Pros

• Balances between detail and speed

• Good for layering pieces

Cons:

• Split more easily than heavier weights

• May not be warm enough for cold weather garments

Category 3: Light

DK weight isn’t too heavy, not too light, making it perfect for a wide range of projects. I find it great for colorwork. Great stitch definition for intricate patterns without being too bulky.

• AKA: DK (Double Knit), Light Worsted

• WPI: 11-15

• Knitting gauge: 21-24 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 12-17 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 3.75-4.5mm (US 5-7)

• Recommended hook size: 4.5-5.5mm (7 to I-9)

Pros

• Works up faster than finer weights

• Great stitch definition for texture

Cons

• May be too warm for some summer garments

• Not as warm as heavier weights for winter wear

Category 4: Medium

Often considered the "standard" yarn weight, and for good reason. It's versatile, easy to work with, and creates a fabric that's perfect for everything from sweaters to afghans. Beginners should always start with worsted weight yarn.

• AKA: Worsted, Aran

• WPI: 9-12

• Knitting gauge: 16-20 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 11-14 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 4.5-5.5mm (US 7-9)

• Recommended hook size: 5.5-6.5mm (I-9 to K-10½)

Pros

• Easy to work with

• Creates a sturdy, warm fabric

Cons

• Can be too warm for summer garments

• May not have the delicate drape of lighter weights

Category 5: Bulky

A favorite for quick projects and warm, cozy garments. I love using it for winter accessories like hats and scarves.

• AKA: Chunky, Craft, Rug

• WPI: 6-9

• Knitting gauge: 12-15 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 8-11 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 5.5-8mm (US 9-11)

• Recommended hook size: 6.5-9mm (K-10½ to M-13)

Pros

• It work up so quickly, it's‌ instant gratification!

• Great for home decor items

Cons

• Can be too warm for some garments

• May be too bulky for detailed stitch patterns

Category 6: Super Bulky

It works up quickly and creates a thick, warm fabric. I once knitted a blanket with super bulky yarn in a single weekend. Talk about a satisfying project!

• AKA: Roving

• WPI: 5-6

• Knitting gauge: 7-11 stitches per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 5-9 double crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 8-12.75mm (US 11-17)

• Recommended hook size: 9-15mm (M-13 to Q)

Pros

• Great for statement pieces and texture

Cons

• Can be overwhelming in garments

• Limited stitch pattern options because of bulk

Category 7: Jumbo

Perfect for extreme knitting and crochet, and arm knitting. Not my usual choice, but working with it occasionally is fun!

• WPI: 1-4

• Knitting gauge: 6 stitches or fewer per 4 inches

• Crochet gauge: 1-5 single crochets per 4 inches

• Recommended needle size: 12.75mm+ (US 17 and larger)

• Recommended hook size: 15mm+ (Q and larger)

Pros

• Great for bold, statement pieces

Cons

• Limited use in everyday projects

• Can be challenging to handle

• Often expensive per project because of the amount needed

Eyelash, ribbon, or other textured yarns rarely fit into weight categories. When working with these:

• Look at the label for recommended hook or needle sizes.

• Consider holding them together with a plain yarn of known weight.

• Always make a gauge swatch, as novelty yarns can behave unpredictably.

Don't be afraid to experiment with different weights to see what you like best!

I’ve been mindful of using up the balls of different fibers I’ve got left over from past yarn tastings. I completed my Sophie Scarf by PetiteKnit in Andean Treasure (100% Baby Alpaca, DK weight) and have been wearing it regularly.

The popularity of this design surprised me. When I first saw it, it didn't inspire me to knit it, as I wasn't sure if I would wear a skinny scarf.

But this yarn's softness was perfect for my bare neck!

The i-cord edge on both sides looks great and the decreases and increases meld into the garter stitch. It’s a clever design and quick and fun to knit.

I had more yarn in my stash to use up: Palette (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, fingering weight.) Here are the notes from my yarn tasting:

My latest knitted swatch is in Palette yarn (the Finnley Heather colorway, fingering weight, 100% Peruvian Highland Wool.) 

I often wonder how they choose the color names and descriptions. Whoever writes them for Knit Picks does a wonderful job!

Here’s what they say about Finnley Heather:

“Finnley Heather is a complex mix of heathered greys that range from cream to a medium ash and taupe grey, along with subtle hints of a darker charcoal grey. Pairing together a warmer cream with a range of greys makes Finnley Heather the ideal, shade-shifting grey that works with a range of colors.”

The thin strand of Palette has tiny fibers that stick out. They show up more when the fabric isn’t washed or blocked.

Having just knitted with the CotLin, I noticed the difference in the feel of working with pure wool. It was rougher, but not unpleasantly so. 

After washing and blocking my swatch, the pure wool fabric is delightful! I love how wool softens and blooms after washing and letting it dry flat.

Back then I was on the hunt for patterns…

I’m searching for patterns to use up the rest of the ball. There’s only 231 yards, so I’m going to have limited options. Any suggestions?

Recently I was looking through my digital knitting design collection and found a lace scarf by Asami Kawa. It’s called the Summer Stream Scarf (a free download on Ravelry).

I figured I could knit a short version with the rest of the Palette yarn. It’s going to end up a very short version! 🤣

I’ve got another small ball I created from unraveling the original swatch. It probably won’t be enough to match the other side's length. We’ll see!

I’m eager to see the lace design reveal its beauty after blocking. I’ve enjoyed working with this yarn. I adore the smell of pure wool. It’s a little rougher straight from the ball but when it’s washed and blocked, it softens.

And for those who’ve got in touch to ask about my secret baby blanket…

I was thrilled when I got the notification on my phone to say it arrived safely in the United States! I messaged my friend to ask her if she’d checked her mailbox and at that moment she’d not been out yet to collect the mail.

I asked her to go out and see if the package arrived.

The next message I got was my friend was holding the blanket in her arms. 😍😍 It filled my heart with joy to see she absolutely loved it!

My friend chose the colors, and I selected Knit Picks Mighty Stitch yarn in the colorways Mulberry and Cream. It’s a blend of 80% acrylic and 20% superwash wool, so it’s lovely and soft. And, it’s machine washable and dryable, which makes it easier for my friend to clean and dry the blanket.

I wanted to knit a mosaic design, and I found this blanket on Purl Soho’s website. I used US 8 (5.00mm) needles, and it knitted up splendidly.

I’m thrilled with how it turned out!

In keeping with the theme of using up yarn from previous projects, I’m going to knit a pillow cover with the rest of the Mighty Stitch yarns.

This time a stranded colorwork design which I’m hunting for.

And here’s the latest on my Chanterelle Pants project.

Wow! These pants are a labor of love! I’ve spent hours on my days off to sew my Chanterelle Pants. When I last updated you, I was up to cutting the pieces out of the fabric and the interfacing.

On my recent day off, I sewed the front and back pockets, then sewed them onto the front and back leg pieces. I was pleased with how they turned out.

I learned new skills about the finishes required for pockets using the interfacing for reinforcement.

As I worked through the instructions, memories of sewing tips my maternal grandmother (Mama) shared with me when I was little came flooding back.

I used bright colored thread sewn through the pattern piece, then in through the fabric pieces below. I cut the threads and removed the paper piece to mark the placements for the back pockets. It’s a nifty trick!

My youngest son (who’s a whizz at sewing) showed me the technique for sewing the crotch by putting one leg inside out and inserting that into the other leg that’s also turned inside out. Then lining up the two inside leg seams and sewing along the crotch. The technique is sewing wizardry!

Though it was hard to focus on following his instructions with my husband in the background singing ‘you put one leg in, and one leg out…’ 😂

The next step is to add in the elastic for the waistband and add the cuffs to the bottom of the legs.

I’ll forever more appreciate the time and effort taken for handmade pants!

Will I finish these pants before my next Fiber Friday? That’s my aim because I’m keen to wear them! 😉

As I mentioned last week, I attended a fascinating artist’s talk by Kate Just, and a knitting/crocheting circle for her Conversation Piece artwork.

It was hosted as part of Residue + Response, the 5th Tamworth Textiles Triennial (a curation of works by textile artists from across Australia.)

I so enjoyed attending the event, and the exhibition was just fabulous.

I’m so glad I got to see the exhibition! It was such an inspiring experience.

As I mentioned last week, Ann Shayne and Kay Gardiner, the founders of Modern Daily Knitting have kindly sent me a copy of their latest Field Guide.

It’s No. 28, and it’s called Renewal, featuring designs by Norah Gaughan:

“What happens when Norah Gaughan, the knitwear legend, pares it all back? These five designs will renew your love of knitting: three cardigans—long, medium, and short. Plus, two clever accessories. Distilled garments that are filled with small moments of joy to knit.”

The book is full of beautiful photographs, it was a joy to read and flip through.

As you can see in the photo above, the structure of the book is…

First the three cardigans designed by Norah Gaughan: Bolin, Addams, & Jacobs, and the two accessories: Jacobs Hat and Austen Mitts. They finish off with all special techniques and abbreviations used in the designs.

The designs all feature Moden Daily Knitting’s newest yarn: Jane.

As they describe it:

“As eternal Anglophiles, we wanted to celebrate British wool by making a yarn in England, with the help of talented yarnmakers in Yorkshire. The base is a blend of British wools: Falkland merino and Masham. The gray-taupe base makes our palette of 11 colors deep and nuanced.”

It’s DK weight, 75% Falkland Wool, 25% Masham Wool, and 125 yds (114 m).

Aren’t the colorways just gorgeous! And the warmth and sturdiness of the wool blend is perfect for the fast-approaching colder months.

I think it’s a beautifully produced book, the designs are gorgeous, so it’d be a perfect addition to your knitting library.

Thanks to , who’s going to knit up her treasured Vicuña yarn using the Sophie Scarf design, I thought I’d try it out too!

It’s amazing how popular this design is, judging by the Ravelry stats.

I used up my ball of Andean Treasure DK 100% Baby Alpaca I did a yarn tasting swatch up with a while ago.

It’s blocked, dried, and ready to wear! If you’re looking for a quick, satisfying, and stylish knit, I’d highly recommend it.

If you haven’t heard of Modern Daily Knitting and their lovely field guides, well, do I have something exciting to share with you!

Ann Shayne and Kay Gardiner, the founders, describe their field guides as:

“Little books that explore the big world of knitting. It’s the series that’s captivating knitters all over.”

They’ve released 27 guides so far, on everything from openwork designs by Amy Christoffers (No. 6) to sock knitting (No. 11 & No. 27, featuring Fatimah Hinds.)

And now, they’ve just released No. 28: Renewal, featuring designs by Norah Gaughan, and they were kind enough to send me a copy!

As I mentioned last week, my sons and I attended a fiber artists’ talk and knitting/crochet circle as part of a fiber arts exhibition at a local art gallery.

Kate Just, the artist, was fascinating to listen to!

Like I’m sure many of you reading this, she was inspired to learn to knit by her mother, who knitted each day to relax after work.

She talked about how you can pick up a craft often by just observing others in your life doing it, something I resonated with. I’m a visual learner, after all!

Kate Just also discussed craft as a creative linage of women, and how when she participates in fiber arts, she feels connected to her creative ancestors.

All those concepts inspired her collaborative projects, like the Conversation Piece featured in the exhibition we went to. Creativity is a beautiful way to connect with others, and that showed in the knitting/crochet circle!

There were fascinating discussions we had. As she mentioned, all of us knitting or crocheted acted as a ‘social lubricant’, leading to great conversations with people that might’ve otherwise been strangers.

When she finished her talk to allow for questions from the participants, I asked her what she saw as the difference between an ‘artist’ and a ‘maker’ who both work with fiber art, if any.

Kate Hall spoke about how ‘craft’ is often artificially separated from art, and through her work, she tries to bridge the gap between the two.

She does this through another large theme in her work: the exploration of ‘perception’, and how our assumptions shape how we perceive artworks.

One way she plays with this was an exhibition of canvases displayed on a gallery wall, par for the course, but only when you got closer did they reveal themselves to be knitted.

She also made incredible, large sculptures displayed in exhibitions of similar works, but unlike the glass, metal, plastic, or wooden makeup of those items, she machine-knitted hers. The result is extraordinary!

I’m making slow, but steady sewing progress on my Chanterelle Pants! I’ll have more to show you soon…

I recently started knitting the Sophie Scarf design by Mette Wendelboe Okkels from PetiteKnit, a Danish designer. Here’s what she said about her creation:

“The Sophie Scarf is worked back and forth in one piece, from tip to tip in garter stitch with built-in i-cord edges. The smaller size Sophie Scarf reaches around the neck once, while the larger size can wrap around the neck twice.”

Taking a look at the stats on Ravelry, the Sophie scarf was very popular! 19,541 projects, in 5,085 queues!

It’s a skinny scarf, perfect for one of my yarn tastings from Knit Picks. To make it, I’m using their Andean Treasure (100% Baby Alpaca, DK weight.) It’s so lovely and soft, and the stitch definition is lovely.

Recently my sons and I attended an artist talk at a local art gallery as part of an exhibition Residue + Response, the 5th Tamworth Textiles Triennial (a curation of works by textile artists from across Australia.)

I had the pleasure of listening to Kate Just, a feminist artist renowned for her innovative use of knitting to address pressing social issues.

As I entered the gallery, a massive length of crocheted and knitting squares, in yellow of all shades, was on display.

The Conversation Piece is a project where participants knit and crochet a large yellow fabric together.

“It celebrates the collective crafting textiles and invites people of all ages, and skill levels to join in. The project creates a living record of collective crafting, conversation, and learning.”

I reflected the people involved and the stories each square held.

Those of us who attended the talk picked up some yellow yarn, and either knitted or crocheted our contribution while we listened to Kate.

I combined crocheting and knitting with a crocheted border.

My youngest son crocheted a square of single crochet.

My eldest (typical for him) cast on far too many stitches, and attempted to do single ribbing, but realized he’d somehow done seed stitch instead. He still enjoyed it, despite only completing a small rectangle within the time.

The Conversation Piece artwork is already 12 meters long! Kate said she’s aiming for thirty, at least!

It was fascinating to learn about Kate’s creative process and the impact of the Conversation Piece.

My brain was buzzing with all the preparation for my Chanterelle Pants project.
I cut out the pattern pieces from what I’m terming ‘a giant sewing jigsaw puzzle.’

From this…

To this! It only took several hours!

The instructions recommended tracing the pieces onto tracing paper.

I purchased my materials at a local Spotlight store: tracing paper, navy blue cotton linen, interfacing, pins, thread, and elastic.

The weight of the tracing paper surprised me. In my past sewing experiences with store-bought patterns, the paper was more like tissue paper. The Birch tracing paper is a little heavier than the printing paper. I used the tracing paper for the back and front pieces. I’m leaving the rest as they are.

The change in the cotton/linen was significant after being washed and dried. Straight from the bolt, it was very stiff. Now it’s more flowy!

Cutting the pattern pieces out, going to the store, tracing and cutting out, washing and drying the fabric took many hours.

There’s nothing quick about this project! I’ve got a greater appreciation for what it takes to sew your own clothes!

By next Friday, I’ll have more to show you. My plan is to cut out the fabric pieces and interfacing and begin sewing. I’m excited!

On the knitting front, I finished my cloudlike cowl (the Welted Cowl design by Jane Richmond, using Aloft by Knit Picks in lace weight.) The mohair/silk fabric is incredibly soft and light. It’s hardly noticeable when I wear it.

I’m grateful natural fibers don’t irritate my skin. I imagine the fluffiness of mohair wouldn’t suit everyone.

It’s essential I thoroughly read instructions and take my time when working on a new sewing project.

Unlike knitting, where if I make a mistake I can unravel the yarn, making an error in cutting out a pattern piece is a whole different story!

The instructions for the Chanterelle Pants are comprehensive. There’s guidance for some techniques in pictorial form and the written instructions are clear.

So, there are many pages to read!

It was bamboozling at the beginning to absorb it all. I’ll be re-reading sections as I come to sewing particular sections of the pattern.

As I went through the pages, a little voice was saying, “gosh there’s lots you don’t know, will you be able to sew these pants?” Ahhh, my inner critic crept in and if I went down the path of self doubt, I’d have given up before even trying!

Slowly, slowly, gently, gently, I said to myself.

I read everything and then read it again, this time, thinking about how much I’ll be learning and what an achievement my finished pants will be!

Will I make mistakes? Probably, but I’m not letting that deter me.

Will I make sure I’m prepared as I can be? A resounding yes!

By the next Fiber Friday, I’ll have more of my progress to show you. Exciting!

My latest yarn tasting is Aloft by Knit Picks (a blend of 72% Super Kid Mohair and 28% Silk in lace weight.) It’s like knitting a cloud!

The design is the Welted Cowl by Jane Richmond for Sweet Georgia Yarns. As she wrote about it in the description:

“This very simple cowl features horizontal welts by alternating Stockinette and reverse Stockinette stitch. A piece like this is perfect for the transitional seasons of spring and fall, and would be equally useful on cool summer nights. I love how such a whisper thin fabric can be so effectively warm and cozy. But what I like most of all is the ability to scrunch up a scarf like this and stuff it into a coat pocket to make it disappear when I’m not wearing it.”

I’ve knitted this design before with a hand dyed mohair silk yarn by Rosehip Island. I wanted a simple project as I’m finding the sewing project complex!

I’ve finished a child sized beanie using up the City Tweed DK yarn. It’s delightfully soft. The Merino wool, super fine Alpaca, and Donegal tweed blend is beautiful to knit with after blocking the fabric is gorgeous.

I created the pom pom with the leftover yarn. It’s larger than I thought it’d be!

I plan to donate the finished beanie to a thrift store, so I hope whoever wears it enjoys its warmth and texture.

While I’ve put down my knitting needles for the time being (swapping out two needles for the one on the sewing machine…)

Here’s my progress so far for my Chanterelle pants by Sew Liberated. I’ve taped the pattern pieces together.

Now that was a job!

I cut the above into more manageable pieces to trace each one.

I considered using baking parchment as tracing paper, but I found it was too slippery, thick and inflexible for pinning to fabric.

I need to dedicate large chunks of time to this project, unlike knitting, where I can squeeze in a few rows during my short breaks in my working hours!

So sewing is my day off project for now.

The great part of writing the weekly What To Knit Next issues is, I find all this wonderful inspiration for my readers… And potential knitting projects!

It’s taking all my willpower to resist the urge to start all these knitting projects!

I thought I’d share some of my favorites I’ve found recently…

The Actinotus Wrap by Ambah O’Brien is incredible!

The lace and geometric mosaic sections draws your attention and it’d be a standout piece in my handmade wardrobe.

The Norma Sweater is still on my radar.

I loved how knitted a winter sweater through the warmer months and she’s inspired me to consider doing the same.

Or the Lenu Sweater, I do so adore cables and seed stitch. The front panel delightfully combines both.

This colorwork vest by Aleks Byrd based on an Estonian angler’s sweater from the ‘50s would be a labor of love. Also, a steep learning curve for me as it requires steeking!

The elegant simplicity of garter stitch panels in Bérangère Cailliau’s Linya shawl’s and unique construction looks like a fun knit.

The pink and mustard with the white star motifs makes the Scandiland Socks design by Summer Lee sing! It’d be my first attempt at an afterthought heal.
I so enjoy learning new techniques. (This design is from her book The Sock Project: Colorful, Cool Socks to Knit and Show Off.)

I also bought ’s lovely Low Key Scarf design a while back. I’m searching for yarns I’d like to use. Any recommendations?

In a recent interview with Joji Locatelli on Fruity Knitting, she was discussing her La Prarie design; an open cardigan with bobbles and cables. I remembered I’d bought that one last year. The bobbles and cables called to me as did the choice of colors.

I need to make the most of my summer knitted tees I’ve already got in my wardrobe, but I’d love to knit with Knit For Olive’s silk yarn. The Reveries Tee by Hanna at Herbgarden Knits, with its delicate eyelets, looks gorgeous!

My latest finished object is a child-size hat. I used Knit Picks City Tweed DK a blend of 55% Merino Wool, 25% Superfine Alpaca, 20% Donegal Tweed. The resulting fabric is so soft and light and is beautiful to touch.

And I’d like your help to decide what should be my next project! Please let me know which one catches your eye in the comments.

Can you hear that?

The whispers from your unfinished projects in the cupboard getting louder?

These UFOs are sick and tired of being ignored!

They get more and more insistent until you admit defeat.

Fine, yes, I’ll finish you! Just please, stop whispering!

Or so it seems with a sewing project I’ve had in my cupboard since December last year! 🤣

I’ve been working on a secret project, a knitted baby blanket for a very dear friend. I want it to be a surprise for her when it finally arrives in the USA.

I’ll talk about that project and show some pics later.

So if that’s you (my very dear friend from the USA) reading this, my lips are sealed! I’ll say this much though, I’ve knitted love into every stitch and it was such a fun knit.

Now, I’m ditching two needles for just one. The sewing machine and I are going to be busy! My knitting needles are taking a well-deserved rest. 😊

Last year, I bought some designs from the talented of Sew Liberated. I’d seen the Chanterelle pants on several people on social media and on ’s post and loved how they looked! I also got the Matcha Top and Strata Top.

Clearly, I was motivated at the time to try my hand at sewing some garments! I printed and taped a third of the pattern pieces together, which took a while.

Then… nothing more since early December last year.

However, the whispers from the cupboard are too loud to ignore! Spring is coming, and pants will be perfect to wear.

Honestly, it feels overwhelming. It’s been so long since I’ve sewn anything for myself. It’ll be a learning curve as my sewing skills are rather rusty!

Does that put me off?

For the last nine months it has, but now I’m ready. I’m determined!

I believe in tackling projects in chunks. The first task is to continue sticking the pieces together. I figure I can achieve this during my work breaks.

Cutting the design pieces, placing the pieces on the fabric and cutting the fabric, I’ll do when I have larger periods of time like on my days off.

I’m eager and also quieting the inner critic who doubts my sewing abilities. I was able to shush the inner knitting critic and have achieved great results! So I know I can count on my determination to do the same in my sewing.

I’m using this daily affirmation to keep me motivated:

“Perseverance fuels my progress and propels me towards success.”

It’ll be a wonderful day indeed when I’m finally wearing the clothing I’ve made!

Whenever I go out to where other people are, I’m on the lookout for anyone else wearing handmade garments made with yarn.

It’s rare for me to see someone wearing a knitted or crocheted garment!

Where I live, we’re in the last throws of winter, so you’d assume it’s the perfect time to wear knitted sweaters, hats, scarves/cowls and fingerless gloves.

I’ve seen some babies and toddlers in knitted clothing, but not any adults.

It got me thinking about the myths bandied about regarding handmade knitted garments:

• It’s too time intensive: people lack time because of their various responsibilities. However, knitting is adaptable to varying time constraints! You’d be surprised in how many pockets in the day there are.

• It’s too expensive: people think handmade things are always expensive, but it depends on the materials. A cashmere sweater won’t be cheap, but a woolen one is much more affordable!

• Less durable: Some believe handmade items are less durable than machine-made ones, but with proper care, handmade knitwear is more long lasting than commercial clothing.

• Requires special care: While some handmade knitwear may have specific instructions, you can machine wash and dry many items.

• Old-fashioned: There’s a perception handmade knitwear isn’t modern-looking, but many designers create stylish pieces that are much in vogue!

• It all looks the same: People might think handmade knitwear lacks variety, but there’s a range of styles and techniques used in handmade pieces.

• It’s always itchy: Not all handmade knitwear is scratchy; it depends on the type of yarn used. Many modern, high-quality yarns are soft.

• It’s not functional: Some think handmade items are more about aesthetics than practicality, but many handmade pieces are as functional and versatile as their mass-produced counterparts.

These myths stem from common misconceptions.

However, with the growing popularity of handmade, these beliefs are being challenged and corrected by makers like us!

Every time I wear my handmade clothing and accessories, I’m proud of my accomplishments! I’m a maker who uses yarn to express my unique flair.

When I’ve finished a project, it feels like wearing a story of stitches. I reflect on the techniques I learned and how rewarding that was. I feel comforted by the cozy texture of the fabric on my body.

I’m so grateful to the talented designers, the yarn dyers, and the yarn suppliers, independent and commercial. We have so much choice!

The best part is handmade clothing lasts a lifetime, and the making becomes your lifelong friend.

Knitting has been with me for 40+ years and will remain for many more years to come (I’m doing all I can to make sure I can always knit & crochet by having a strong body and healthy mind!)

As I write this, I’m wearing my Chasing Lights Shawl, and my Pomatomus Socks. The detail in those socks still blows me away and my hands knitted them brings me such joy! Making with my hands is a gift I treasure.

It’s funny how even after all these years of crafting, I still run into roadblocks you think I would’ve solved by now!

Luckily, though, I’ve also picked up ways of dealing with them.

Sometimes, how I see things make the roadblocks, like when I doubt myself or get caught up in perfectionism.

Other times, they’re more practical issues, like running out of yarn halfway through a project (annoying!)

There are dozens I could talk about (many of which you probably know all too well…) but I’ll stick to the ones I experience the most.

The one that always gets me is decision paralysis. What do you mean, I have to choose? There are so many gorgeous yarns and designs!

Then there’s social comparison and the fear of failure (I worry my finished project won’t look anything like the design.)

It’s enough to make me not even want to cast on sometimes!

Time is a challenge, too. Balancing knitting with everything else in life is tricky, as is being realistic about how long projects will take! Let alone staying focused, it’s easy to want to try something new instead.

One thing that’s helped is setting clear goals for my projects, which keep me focused and motivated.

Creating the right environment has also made an enormous difference for me. I have a great comfy chair and a floor lamp I can use to illuminate the stitches as I knit or crochet.

Dealing with perfectionism has been a journey. I’ve had to learn that “perfect” is often the enemy of “done.” Now, I give myself permission to make mistakes and try to be kind to myself.

Taking breaks has been super helpful too.

Even just stepping away for a few minutes can calm me down. I’ll do some stretches or take a quick walk – it’s amazing how much it helps!

Throughout my years of crafting, I’ve experienced none of the common ailments knitters can face (like repetitive stress, tennis/golfers elbow, carpal tunnel or muscular aches in my hands, forearms, shoulder, back or shoulders.)

And what a relief that has been!

However… this has changed.

Now, I’ve got pain in the side of my right hand, my right forearm and my right shoulder joint is clicking and often feels out of place.

It’s taken me by surprise!

My current exercise routine is walking 6 days a week in nature, and two short home yoga sessions every day (one in the morning and another just before bed.)

My crafting practice has always involved occasional stretches and checking my posture, but not with consistency! I need to incorporate daily stretches and exercises (and stick to them!) if I’m going to knit long into my old age.

So… off to do some research I went.

‘Knitting Comfortably: The Ergonomics of Handknitting’ by Carson Dermer and his online articles for Modern Daily Knitting were useful!

I also watched an informative interview Madeline from Fruity Knitting did with Regina Sennrich, who presented ‘Knitting Health’ at the Swiss Yarn Festival.

(Note: the interview is in German with subtitles.)

They discussed ways to make knitting more comfortable, and how we can deal with pain. I recommend watching it, as I learned a lot.

Regina’s clever technique involved taping the thumb and index finger to form an ‘o’ shape. This shape alleviates strain on the fingers and thumb, especially important for those with arthritis and tendonitis.

Those were just some resources I found when I spent hours researching how to create a ‘healthy crafting practice’. I’ve compiled it all here on Knit Like Granny.

I’m committed to my daily ‘healthy crafting’ routine for a pain-free future. I’ve got a checklist so I can tick off the exercises each day. It gives me a visual for how much progress I’ve made, too, which is encouraging!

I’m determined to knit and crochet for the rest of my life!

Experts say it takes a few weeks to form a new habit. So I’ll keep you posted on how I’m doing.

I thought I’d share some project updates from things I’ve made recently… Enjoy!

As part of my yarn tastings, I swatched some High Desert Tweed yarn in the Outlaw colorway (89% American Wool, 6% Acrylic & 5% Rayon.)

The color is greener than what it shows up here. It's a smooth yarn to knit with and I knitted one of the designs from Knit Picks, the Wych Elm Hat.

The twisted rib is one of my favorite rib stitches. The botanical theme of the design worked so well with the color of the yarn!

It’s such a lovely design, and the textured stitches keep things interesting! Here’s what Bridget Pupillo, the designer, says about the structure:

“It’s a botanical-themed Aran cable beanie in five sizes, featuring a central tree motif flanked by vines climbing up columns. Small bobbles and a simple but interesting texture pattern complete the hat.”

Then I was up to the crown decreases of my hat. It was such a fun knit!

Just look at those bobbles! The stitch definition is fantastic.

As you may remember, I challenged myself and learn to knit gloves.

I used Knit Picks Palette Yarn (100% Peruvian Highland Wool, Fingering Weight) in the Tidepool Heather colorway.

Do you find returning to knitting with small diameter needles takes getting use to after knitting with larger needles? These are US0/2mm.

It took time to find my rhythm and reacquaint my fingers and hands with the Addi Crasy Trio needles, so I knitted onto the third needle with more ease.

For the thumb gusset, I used Left Lifted and Right Lifted increases.

The tiny stitches can be tricky! My brain was a buzz with all this new learning! 😊 The thumb stitches were on the scrap yarn, and I knitted the palm up to the crook of the pinky finger.

I realized I needed to be more careful putting the project down if I’m halfway through a row. I came back to it and one needle had slid out of the stitches!

Consequently, some stitches dropped. The stitches were so small and fixing a dropped stitch is tedious!

For now, that project is on pause while I knit a baby blanket for a dear friend. No photos for that one yet, as it’s a surprise!

I’m looking forward to coming back to it! Having a pair of gloves I knitted myself is such an exciting prospect.

For the last five weeks, I told you the story of:

Frustrated Teacher Quits In Disgust, Sells The Farm, Moves The Family Halfway Across The World And… Starts Knitting

Nine years ago, I was unsatisfied, stressed, and overwhelmed. Today, I'm a knitter and crocheter sharing my passion with thousands online.

(In case you missed it, here’s Part One, Two, Three, Four & Five, now with pictures!)

And while I’ve hinted at the ‘starts knitting’ part, many of you wanted to know more. So… here’s that part of my story.

Knitting has been in and out of my life for as long as I can remember.

As I mentioned last week, my beloved Mama (grandmother) taught me to knit and crochet. We started with simple projects, like dolls clothes and blankets.

By my late teens, I was making (and wearing) garments I’d made. I felt very cool!

When I started studying Hospitality at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, the Uni was an hour away by train. So, I spent my travelling time on the train knitting sweaters.

A good friend who later became my husband called me “Knitting Nancy” as I would often knit during lectures. Little did I know then how precious those moments of creativity would become.

Alas… all that making would soon grind to a halt.

I began working full time after graduating from university. Soon, the responsibilities of adult living took over. Especially when I moved to the farm with my future husband, got married, became a teacher and parent!

There were lesson plans to prepare, little ones to care for, meals to cook, a household to manage and a vineyard to look after.

In-between the busy years of my kids’ early childhoods, knitting and crocheting made two all-too-brief appearances. I knitted a mitered square blanket for my firstborn during my maternity leave and crocheted a blanket for my second born.

After that… Well… It almost disappeared altogether.

However… in the last 9 years it’s been a constant!

So what changed?

Life has a way of slowly pushing aside the things we love. I found myself constantly juggling responsibilities and my knitting needles and crochet hooks sat unused in a basket stuffed in the back of the cupboard.

I told myself I didn't have the time. Wasn't I supposed to be focused on more "important" things?

But in reality, I did have it.

I was just spending that time doing things I thought I ‘should’ do but weren’t fulfilling. I was losing a part of myself.

Our family's big move (selling the farm, quitting our jobs, and heading overseas) was one of the biggest (and most stressful) changes we’d made.

While overhauling my entire life, I reassessed everything: my possessions, my attitudes, and how I spent my time.

And I realized I couldn’t go on without having a creative outlet. So in my bag went my knitting needles and crochet hooks.

While we’d planned to head to Spain, with its cooler weather (perfect for making,) beaches, and the local language…

Life had other ideas, and we found ourselves in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

With the hot and humid weather, knitting sweaters was out of the question! And given I hadn’t knitted or crocheted for what felt like years… I was a little rusty.

And even finding yarn to knit with was an endeavor! I eventually found a large haberdashery store with a tiny selection of yarn… but it was all cotton. A fiber perfect for the climate, but not something I usually knitted or crocheted with.

So… what was I supposed to make?

One of the most valuable lessons I learned while living overseas was being flexible, as you can probably tell!

I finally came up with the idea of making dishcloths. They were functional, quick and satisfying projects, and a perfect way to learn new stitches.

It was even better that they made great gifts for the amazing people we met.

Those wonderful people helped us in our adjustment to being a ‘traveling homeschooling family’. My gift of a knitted dishcloth was a small token of the heartfelt appreciation we had for them.

Given the weather, I found I was the only one knitting in the homeschooling groups we were involved with in the outdoor classes my kids attended. People took an interest in what I was knitting and the stitches I was using.

I soon began teaching others how to knit and crochet (which was a great lesson in both the craft and Spanish!)

And I realized what I’d been missing all those years.

In the midst of navigating a new country, the repetitive motions calmed my mind and helped me process all the new experiences.

I formed bonds with the lovely people in the community. Language barriers weren’t a problem when we all ‘spoke’ creativity! As interest in my craft grew, I realized I had something valuable to share.

Just as I had rediscovered the joy of learning through knitting, we wanted our children to experience education as a journey of curiosity and discovery.

So, speaking of homeschooling, many of you had questions about our worldschooling experience, including Es, who asked:

What did you think of worldschooling and how did you contact/connect with the community?

We've had great success with Facebook groups dedicated to worldschooling and traveling families. These groups are treasure troves of information and support.

My advice? Search for these groups, join a few that resonate with you, and spend some time reading posts to see if they're a good fit.

In the past, members of these online communities often organized in-person meetups and retreats. These events are fantastic opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals and share experiences.

While we haven't made it to South America yet, I've heard there are vibrant homeschooling communities there that run regular events.

We eventually moved away from a strict curriculum, embracing a more self-directed learning style. Our kids learned through their curiosity, real-world experiences, and core subjects like English, Spanish, math, and science.

The diverse worldschooling communities we encountered provided invaluable learning opportunities.

I'm excited to continue exploring through craft and life!

If there's one thing I've learned, it's to embrace the unexpected. Sometimes, the best experiences come from the detours we never planned to take.

But the universe had other plans.

Instead of Spain as our first destination, we moved to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Which, serendipitously, was the best thing we could have done…

Part Five

Living in Playa Del Carmen for nearly 6 months was one of the best things we’ve done. The homeschooling community was amazing, and my kids’ language skills improved exponentially.

The nature with cenotes, beaches and the jungle were incredible!

We got into a rhythm of homeschooling the kids where we eventually ditched the curriculum.

They became self-directed learners, learning new things by following their curiosity, and the core subjects of English, Spanish, math, and science.

Their experiences of being immersed in the world-schooling community of different countries and cultures provided countless learning opportunities!

We’ve since been to over ten countries (Mexico, Spain, Romania, Moldova, Italy, Japan, Taiwan, England, Scotland, The Netherlands, and most recently, a year in Thailand.)

We’ve met wonderful people and had fascinating experiences.

You’d think such a change would be the end of the story. And what a shift it was!

But that was just the beginning…

When I was younger, I adored knitting, crocheting, and making. As I mentioned, my beloved Mama (grandmother) taught me how to do those crafts.

Together, we made knitted dolls dresses and crocheted covers for their beds, sewed garments for me and matching ones for my dolls.

Not only had she taught me about cooking and gardening: she instilled in me a love of handmade, the satisfaction of creativity, resourcefulness, and a willingness to always keep learning. Qualities I’m grateful to have to this day.

Except... when the pressures of being a parent and a busy teacher fell upon me...

Of course, my creative pursuits were the first thing to fall by the wayside.

After all, I didn’t have time!

So, I kept feeling directionless, unfulfilled, with nothing to look forward to at the end of the day.

I knew I could no longer ignore my passions.

As I picked up my knitting needles again for the first time in years, the rhythmic click and the soft texture of the yarn gave me an immediate sense of calm. It was like rediscovering the me that’d been buried under layers of stress and responsibility.

People I met on my travels often asked about my current project, as I brought it everywhere with me.

That led to conversations about the benefits of crafting, and how it benefited me, and I taught people all over the world about how it could help them.

Until someone looked at me and said... “This is so helpful! You should start sharing this online!”

That set me on a new journey... One of creating a community on the internet, where we celebrate making, creativity, and lifelong learning.

I’ve managed my craft websites and written weekly issues about the joy of crafting, for over 9 years now!

And now, here I am, writing on Substack, part of the Yarn Bay community.

Where we stand together and say no to fast fashion, big businesses squeezing independent makers, mindless distraction perpetuated by AI-driven-algorithms, society brushing older women aside, and the constant societal pressure to have and do more to be successful.

And we dispel harmful myths like handicrafts are only for older people, crafting is unproductive and a frivolous waste of time, and you can’t be seen making in public.

Not to mention people who think knitting is the same as crocheting and vice versa and ask you why you’d spend 23 hours making a sweater when you could just buy one!

We can choose a different way. One that’s kinder to ourselves, each other, and the planet. Where we’re all celebrated, not shunned for our differences.

Where we share the power of creativity, make a difference, nurture each other, share our wisdom and resourcefulness, and embrace lifelong learning.

That’s the spirit of Yarn Bay.

And of course, this wonderful community includes you!

I told you about how my husband had casually suggested my kids and I learn Spanish. Me, because it’s good to learn new things, and them, because we’d always wanted them to have a second language. I agreed, and so we all began.

Except, little did I know it was just the first phase in his cunning plan…

We were all having difficulties.

My kids struggled at school, my husband was sick of having to be away from our family all the time, and I couldn’t bear my job any longer.

His solution was… selling the farm, moving halfway across the world, and homeschooling our kids. The only question was… could we do it?

Part Four

So... we decided to do it. Believe me, it wasn’t easy!

One thing we did as part of making the decision was writing out the pros and cons of our plan to travel as a family and world-school our kids.

We discussed it as a family, and the kids (then 12 and 7) were honest about their worries. Leaving school, friends, relatives, and the home they’d grown up in was a big change! They weren’t at all sure about it!

We acknowledged their concerns, but the pros outweighed the cons.

My initial reluctance vanished, thoughts of adventures we’d have was exciting!

We began the process of selling the farm: one of the most stressful times of my life.

First, there was all the stuff we’d accumulated over the years to organize. Given most of it hid in cupboards, I didn’t know how much there was until we pulled it all out. We didn’t even use it all!

Out came clothing I hadn’t worn in years, toys the kids had forgotten they had, and a surprising number of golf clubs when my husband had gone through a brief phase of spending time at the local range.

Not to mention all the old magazines, books, and kitchenware!

So, the first of hundreds of trips to the thrift stores began…

Among the clutter, I rediscovered my old knitting and crocheting supplies, which I squirreled away. I had a feeling I might need them…

We’d decided early in 2015 we’d leave in September for Spain. This was so our kids could be immersed in Spanish culture and practice Spanish to build conversational skills. We’d also be avoiding the high season, and we wanted to swim in the Mediterranean. We love the beach!

But we make plans, and the universe has other ideas...

The sale of our property took longer than expected. A whole three months longer! Turns out there was much involved in selling and the settlement of a rural property.

We’d agreed to move out earlier in a show of goodwill to the buyers. We lived in a caravan with an annexed room my parents-in-law owned down by a lake, 45 minutes out from where we’d been living.

Instead of keeping the kids in school, we started homeschooling them, using an online program based on the Australian Curriculum, Babbel for Spanish, and Khan Academy.

The kids sat at the camping table, computers and books spread out in front of them, while I juggled supervising them and filling out forms. I’d never done so much paperwork in my life!

When the sale went through, I almost collapsed with relief.

By that time, December loomed, with the icy winds and chill of a European winter. I couldn’t take our kids halfway across the world to winter when I’d promised them the beach! What was I to do?

One of the best parts of our planning was being involved in online groups for traveling families. They were so generous with their knowledge and support. We made lifelong friends through those groups.

We shared our predicament about having to rethink Spain as our destination and asked where else people recommended with a thriving homeschooling community, fast internet, and Spanish as the spoken language.

So many people had high praise for the homeschooling community in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, a beach town in the Yucatán, an hour south of Cancún. A new friend I’d made online ran a homeschooling group there and she said: come visit!

Thanks to her kind invitation, I’ve learned the best things in life come from being open to new experiences.

And, not giving in to others’ fears.

Our family and friends were very hesitant of us traveling to Mexico. The media makes out that the whole of Mexico is a dangerous place, which of course isn’t true.

Australia also has a reputation for being dangerous! I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with people worried about the venomous and poisonous wildlife in Australia!

I was so thankful to know we could connect with kind, generous and knowledgeable people already living the life we were only just beginning.

We were determined.

So, we packed our backpacks, and headed for Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
