Wool blend yarns are a fantastic choice for baby blankets, offering warmth and durability. However, to ensure it's gentle on a baby's skin, choose a blend featuring a higher percentage of soft fibers like Merino wool or alpaca. These fibers are less irritating and cozier for sensitive skin. Always wash the finished blanket with a mild, baby-friendly detergent to soften it further before use.

That’s a good point. I'd recommend starting with simpler projects since heathered yarns don't show stitch definition as clearly as solid yarns. This makes them perfect for:

• Basic hats

• Simple sweaters

• Blankets with basic stitch patterns

• Easy accessories

Many small businesses and one-person operations make gorgeous hand-dyed yarn! I’ve never seen such beautiful colors and variety.

Remember, if you're using a darker heathered yarn, it's tricky to count stitches. Start with a lighter colored heathered yarn for your first project.

The great news is because of heathered yarns’ two-tone blended appearance, even the simplest stitches will look interesting!

Excerpt From The Yarn Habits Success Manual

Chapter 3: Natural Vs. Synthetic Fibers

The Great Fiber Face-Off

Natural fibers come from plants or animals: wool from sheep, cotton from cotton plants, or silk from silkworms. People have used these fibers for thousands of years, and there's something magical about working with materials that connect us to nature and ancient textile traditions.

Synthetic fibers are human-made, from petroleum-based chemicals: acrylic, nylon, and polyester. These fibers emerged in the mid-20th century and revolutionized the textile industry.

Some fibers are a blend of synthetic and natural. Bamboo rayon offers a texture comparable to silk, but much cheaper.

Each fiber has its strengths and weaknesses.

Natural fibers often have a wonderful feel against the skin. The first time I knitted with 100% merino wool it was like working with clouds! Natural fibers are great for regulating body temperature. They absorb moisture without feeling damp, a quality I appreciate in wool socks during long walks.

However, natural fibers are more expensive, and some require special care. I learned this the hard way when I felted my just-finished baby alpaca cowl in the washing machine! Many natural fibers are also susceptible to moth damage.

Synthetic fibers are affordable and low maintenance. They're machine washable and dryable, resist wrinkles, and are less likely to be damaged by insects.

But synthetics aren’t as breathable as natural fibers, which make them uncomfortable in hot weather.

Some people also find synthetic fibers less pleasant to the touch, although modern manufacturing techniques have improved their feel.

In my yarn stash, you'll find a mix. For warm, cozy winter wear, I often reach for wool or alpaca. The natural crimp in these fibers traps air, providing excellent insulation. For summer projects, I love working with cotton or cotton/bamboo.

When I need something durable and easy to care for, like for children's clothes or frequently used household items, I often opt for synthetic/wool blends. Wool/Acrylic yarn is my favorite for blankets that withstand repeated washing.

I’ve been listening to a book where the cheese is as important as the mystery…

As you may remember, a while ago, I listened to the first book in the Follet Valley Mystery series by Ian Moore, Death & Croissants.

I really enjoyed that one, so now, I’m listening to the second book in the series, called Death & Fromage. It’s great so far! Here’s the description:

“Running a B&B in the Val de Follet means nothing exciting ever happens to Richard, and really that's the way he likes it.

Until scandal erupts in the nearby town of Saint-Sauver, when its famous restaurant is downgraded from three Michelin stars to two. The restaurant is shamed, the town is in shock, and the leading goat cheese supplier drowns himself in one of his own pasteurization tanks. Or does he?

Valérie d'Orçay, who is staying at the B&B while house-hunting in the area, isn't convinced that it's a suicide.

Despite his misgivings, Richard is drawn into Valérie's investigation and finds himself becoming a major player in solving the crime. “How do they make tweed yarn?”

I adore tweed yarns! They add such interesting texture to an otherwise plain knitting design. I did some research, so here’s an excerpt from my updated post on tweed yarn about the making process:

• Wool is dyed in various colors according to the desired tweed pattern.

• Dyed wool is mixed to specific recipes to achieve the characteristic tweed color blends. The blended wool is carded again to ensure even distribution of colors.

• Small, textured elements called 'neps' or 'nups' are added to the wool blend for additional texture and visual interest.

• The prepared wool is spun into yarn using traditional spinning methods or modern machinery. The spun yarn is plied (multiple strands twisted together) for strength and consistency.

• The plied yarn may undergo additional treatments, such as steaming or brushing, to enhance its texture.

• Quality control inspections are performed to ensure the yarn meets specifications.

• The finished tweed yarn is wound into skeins and sent to yarn stores!

So often we crave certainty, as it’s familiar and safe, but often staying open to new things is the only way we’ll find what we’re looking for.

“There is a big difference between a truth and an answer. When I land on a truth, I feel my being stretching like sunlight far beyond my physical body, and I experience the thoughts in my mind as passing clouds. And, when I find answers, they very often turn out to be just clouds.”

I loved her thoughts on growing as a person and paying attention to the magic of the everyday life around you. Mexico City is a place I’m yet to visit, and her essay made me all the more determined to get there!

Have you ever heard of microseasons? As explains:

“The idea of microseasons comes from ancient Chinese farming culture dividing the year into 24 seasons, each with a poetic name according to the Sun’s position and its effect on the agriculture of that region.

Sometime later, this way of marking time was adopted in ancient Japan, where each season was subdivided into three parts, creating a total of 72 seasons lasting about five days each.”

Living throughout the year with those seasons as her guide is what her Substack of the same name is all about!

The terrific treasures of Tuscany.

is an Australian-Japanese author of six cookbooks (her latest is Gohan: Everyday Japanese Cooking, which looks incredible!

She lives in Tuscany and given its the summer vacation time in the Northern Hemisphere, her recommendations of little-known treasures worth visiting in Tuscany came at just the right time.

This one in particular caught my interest:

“Nearby, if you’re up for a hike through the Mediterranean scrub, drive halfway up to Populonia (beautiful views from this Etruscan village) and there is a spot to leave the car and walk about 30 minutes to the beautiful Buca delle Fate.”

How I love walking in nature! When we visited Northen Italy in 2016, I was struck by how picturesque the landscape was.

And I enjoyed how she ended with what she’s cooking at the moment. Plenty of inspiration for your own meals!

Moors of Scotland in a fabric form.

is a visual artist who lives on the beautiful Isle Of Arran, Scotland (not to be confused with the Aran Islands, which are where the knitted Aran sweaters originated.) She makes art journals, books, fiber art, and more!

She’s endlessly inspired by the nature around her, and in this dispatch, she talks about how the stark beauty of the heather turned into an exhibition of her work.

It’s extraordinary art! As she mentions:

“Over the years my work has shifted around different landscapes but I always come back to the heather moorlands.”

The extraordinary lengths one woman will go to support local.

When you hear of exceptional goals, of course you want the person to succeed! And Caroline Weaver is having great success so far.

As interviewed by in her Café Anne newsletter, Caroline Weaver wanted to visit all the locally run small businesses in New York City.

All 14,000 of them! As of Jul 2024, she only has 3000 left to visit. Why?

As Anne Kadet writes:

Ms. Weaver had a good reason for this embarking on this epic retail odyssey: she needed the data to create The Locavore Guide, the city’s first complete online directory of mom-and-pop shops.

Ms. Weaver's aim: to make it easier for people to shop local.

"People have lost touch with how fun shopping can be—that just going out and buying basic things can be really enjoyable," she said. "That's why independent shops exist. You go in and you learn something, and you talk to your neighbors, and you leave feeling good."

There’s something so special being part of a community. Being known in the places you visit often, the shopkeepers calling you buy name, and the barista knowing your regular coffee order before you even have to ask!

It looks like Caroline Weaver is onto something.

Is it ever too late to change your life?

I think you know the answer to this question…

In this thoughtful essay, tackles this scary but freeing question: am I too old to change my life? It’s a follow up to her equally worth reading post on ‘two years ago I quit my life.’ She writes with such conviction.

She reminds us the only real barrier to change is our own self-doubt.

As crafters, we know the thrill of starting a new project! Boyd encourages us to apply that same excitement to our lives.

How our world changes as we age:

“As we get older, it also seems that we start to feel less and less like the world is there for us to explore. We worry about moving, traveling, or simply giving up what is familiar.”

As she stresses, convincing yourself is half the task:

“The first step in any journey is the believing in yourself. You have to be able to tell yourself, Yes, this crazy, outlandish, audacious thing I’ve fantasized about is actually possible… Doubts will naturally crop up, but deep down you must have faith in yourself.”

The never-ending story of a personal library.

You won’t believe the size of ’s personal library: over 3000 books! And he needs them, given the research required for his upcoming book, Tools Of Invention: the surprising story of how books made our world & shape our future.

In this delightful post, he describes how he solved this daunting task. His writing shows us how our libraries are living reflections of our creativity.

“Let me explain the scope of the project. Upon my most recent count, I had about 3,200 books, many still in boxes. I’ve got two floor-to-ceiling built-ins in my study covering two walls and a new set along one wall at the top of the stairs.”

And final note about the 'permanent work in progress' nature of a home library resonated with me:

“And that’s probably something worth noting about a personal library, maybe the most important thing: It’s never fully organized because it’s never fully done. A personal library is a permanent work in progress with all the discovery, rediscovery, and joy that implies. With a home library, the final 90% is never complete. It’s just an open invitation for more attention and curation.”

It’s all or nothing: the art of embracing life.

writes beautifully about her life (especially in her book, A Still Life) and this essay is no exception.

When it comes to the soul, it’s often all or nothing. As she writes:

“The trouble is, as soon as you close your heart to one thing — to anything — you close your heart. It doesn’t work in increments. As soon as I begin to say no and pull away, there is a contraction, and that contraction closes me off. So I have to ask the question: do I want be open, or closed? Then I have to follow through. I have to acknowledge that to say ‘no’ to the cloud means also saying no to the tight fists of the peonies next to me too.”

And as she reminds the reader as much as herself:

“It is not the easy lesson you think it is. Real love is all in. ‘All in’ is what it means to choose to really love my garden, ‘nature’, the world. It’s what it means to choose to love my body and myself. It’s what it means to choose to love life itself and that is not easy, not easy at all.”

The note she ends on is such a powerful one:

“What do I want most? To die saying ‘welcome, welcome, thank you’. To die smiling if I can. To be so well practised, it comes easy. Then I’ll know I’ve lived.”
