INSIDE: The wonders of a visual journal, what women artists need, and embracing the ‘unfolding’ process for a life well lived…

👀 Last week’s top read: let Grant Snider tell you about the thousand story house.

Now for this weekend’s recommended reads…

The wonders of a visual journal.

Susanne Helmert
posts dispatches from her artist's studio and shares her latest photography as a visual journal.

Each shot is a beautiful blend of art and reflection, and every issue has a theme, like this one being ‘green.’

As she writes:

“I started “My Visual Journal” as an addition to my regular newsletter to share the photos I have taken during the week on my walks. The idea is “more photos, less words”.

What women artists need.

Anne Boyd
has a thought-provoking exploration into the often-overlooked question of what women artists need in their creative practice.

Her insights on the need for time, space, and recognition resonated with me:

“So many women writers have found in solitude an antidote to the self-sacrifice to which women are so often conditioned. And that is what I needed when I left home. I needed some time apart from responsibility to family to begin to see myself again. I had become so lost inside of the matrix of other people’s needs and emotions. But having spent a fair bit of time alone now, I feel myself tipping too far in the other direction at times.”

Embracing the ‘unfolding’ process for a life well lived.

Henrik Karlsson
’s essay on how to apply the design process to living a good life is fascinating! He likens the experience of a delicate unfolding.

It reminds me of the beauty in the mystery of the creative process. As he says:

“I paid attention to things I liked to do, and found ways to do more of that. I made it easy for interesting people to find me, and then I hung out with them. We did projects together.

I kept iterating—paying attention to the context, removing things that frustrated me, and expanding things that made me feel alive.

Eventually, I looked up and noticed that my life was nothing like I imagined it would be. But it fit me.”

Beyond the velvet rope you’ll find…

  • A new glimpse into ancient cartography.

  • Why older readers are the best part about bookselling.

  • Plus! The books I’ve loved recently, and a calming acoustic song I adore…
