Letter From Jodie Morgan: Founding Editor

In this issue, there’s… fiber, art + food adventures in Paris, weaving preparations for a Scottish festival, Fall’s beauty through art, and…

Plus, beyond the velvet rope (unlocked for you this week) you’ll find…

The endless ingenuity of textiles, and unraveling Viking women's history.

(Disclosure: Any purchases made through links may earn me a commission.)

What I’ve Loved This Week

I’ve been listening to The Lake House by Kate Morton. It’s a great historical, dual-timeline mystery! Very thrilling.

Just finished listening to Book 5 in the Glass & Steele series. I’ve also been listening to the Tea Ladies Mystery series by Amanda Hampson. It’s such a great collection of mysteries! The characters come alive and the writing is hilarious.

Curiosity Corner

Question From A Reader

“Where can I find some indie dyed yarn?”

Many small businesses and one-person operations make gorgeous hand-dyed yarn! I’ve never seen such beautiful colors and variety.

I’ve just updated my post which has a list of fantastic indie yarn dyers:

“They're listed in alphabetical order and divided by location. Some businesses have a physical store but all offer online shopping.”

Hope you find your dream yarn from these dyers! Is there anyone I’ve missed on the list? Please reply or leave a comment with your favorites.

Worth A Read — The Yarn Whisperer by Clara Parkes

“A humorous, beautifully written collection of essays reflecting on Clara Parkes' life as a knitter. This book connects personal stories with insights about yarn and knitting culture. Anything she writes is a joy to read.”

— Sourced from my recommended books for your fiber arts library.

Hand-Curated Reads You Can't Miss…

Stitching & Discovering Memories In The City Of Lights

I loved

Katherine Radburn
's lively recount of her 'Trente heures en Paris' in the latest edition of Making Miscellany.

Imagine fabric-shopping in Paris wearing an outfit crafted from local textiles—how delightful! Katherine's crafting and travel tales were a reminder of how travel can reinvigorate our creative passions.

Handcrafted Delights For The Scottish Festival With

Emily Wallace
is preparing for a creative showcase at the Rocket City Scottish Festival, bringing unique Shibori dyed kitchen towels and handwoven items.

Her article showcases her process but also details her journey from quitting a job that didn't value her to embracing the fiber arts full-time.

It’s always so inspiring to see someone follow their calling!

Fall’s Beauty Through Art

I delight in seeing how others welcome the change of seasons through their creative expressions, and

Helen C Stark
's recent journal post captures that.

She muses about the joyous days of early autumn, using her art to explore and celebrate the natural world. From sketching rose hips to dyeing ribbons with elderberries, her entries remind us of Fall’s fleeting but vibrant beauty.

Insider Inspiration…

The Endless Ingenuity of Textiles

In this essay by Virginia Postrel, she explores the often-overlooked world of textiles and their profound impact on technology, economy, and society. The piece rekindles your appreciation for this ancient, yet innovative craft.

It's fascinating to realize it isn’t merely fabric but a history of economic revolutions and culture shifts!

Unraveling Viking Women's History

I was fascinated by this article about Viking women. Often relegated to the margins of historical narratives, they were actually central to the economic and social fabric (literally!) of their societies.

Michèle Hayeur Smith's exploration of ancient textiles highlights the technical skills of these women. The textiles they made were extraordinary!

Hope this issue has sparked your curiosity and creativity!

Thank you for sharing my post! I also love reading kate Morton. I was actually thinking of reading her “secret keeper” again. It’s my favourite book of hers.
